Product Description

Lace Bolero is perfect for those times in summer when you might feel a bit chilly. The pattern begins in the front then stitches for the sleeves are added. Later, the back is continued on. Therefore, you will only have underarm seams to sew. All edges including the sleeves, bottom edge, both fronts, and the neckline are finished in contrasting color applied I-cord. The pattern is only given in two sizes as the pattern repeat does not allow in between sizes. A beautiful brooch is used for closure.

K741 Lace Bolero by Nazanin Fard

What Is Being Made

The K741 Lace Bolero is a lightweight summer garment designed to provide warmth during cool evenings. This knitted bolero features an elegant lace construction and is offered in two sizes: Small-Medium and Large-X-large. The design is characterized by its sophisticated lace pattern throughout, making it an ideal layering piece for seasonal transitions.

Construction Method and Design Approach

This bolero employs a strategic construction sequence that minimizes finishing work. The pattern begins with the front panel, after which sleeve stitches are added to the existing fabric. The back is then continued seamlessly from the established stitches. This methodical approach results in only underarm seams requiring hand-sewing, significantly reducing the finishing burden compared to traditionally constructed boleros. A decorative brooch or button serves as the closure mechanism, adding both functionality and visual interest to the neckline.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Twisted Lace Pattern – The primary stitch pattern used throughout the bolero, creating an openwork fabric ideal for warm-weather wear
  • I-cord Edging – Applied in a contrasting color to all edges, including the sleeves, bottom edge, both front panels, and neckline for a polished, professional finish
  • Knit and purl stitches as foundational elements within the lace pattern

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for 405 yards (370 meters) of 100% Acrylic in light (sport) weight for the main color (Pink, designated as A), plus 100 yards (91 meters) of 100% Mercerized Cotton in light (sport) weight for the contrasting I-cord edging (Black, designated as B). Secondary yardage options of 810 yards (741 meters) and 200 yards (183 meters) respectively are provided for the larger size.

Needles and Notions: Knitting needles in size 5 (3.75 mm) are used for the main fabric, while two double-pointed knitting needles in size 4 (3.5 mm) are required for working the I-cord edging. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, plus one optional button or brooch for closure.

Gauge and Difficulty Level

The stitch gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the Twisted Lace pattern using size 5 needles. This pattern is rated at an intermediate level of experience, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to work with lace patterns and multi-step construction sequences.
