K719 – Change of Scenery Wrap by Nazanin Fard

Project Overview

The Change of Scenery Wrap is an advanced-level knitted shawl designed as a sophisticated lace accessory. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished wrap measuring 17 inches by 60 inches (43 by 152 centimeters) without fringe, making it a versatile piece suitable for layering or draping. The design showcases elegant lace work through the combination of two complementary stitch patterns that work in harmony to create a cohesive, refined aesthetic.

Design and Construction

This wrap features a thoughtfully structured layout composed of two distinct lace pattern panels worked on both sides, with a center panel showcasing a different stitch pattern. The dual-pattern approach creates visual interest while maintaining design balance. The wrap is constructed using a provisional cast-on method, allowing for seamless integration of the various pattern sections. The interplay between the two lace patterns demonstrates advanced design principles that complement each other to achieve a unified, sophisticated finished appearance.

Stitch Patterns and Techniques

The Change of Scenery Wrap employs advanced lace knitting techniques that require intermediate to advanced skill levels. The primary stitch patterns used include:

  • Flemish Braid: A gorgeous lace pattern worked over 25 stitches that forms the outer panels. This pattern alternates between wrong-side rows of purling and right-side rows featuring yarn overs and decreases. The Flemish Braid incorporates multiple yarn-over and decrease combinations, including double yarn-over and ssk (slip, slip, knit) sequences, as well as k2tog (knit two together) decreases paired with yarn overs to create the characteristic openwork of lace knitting.
  • Elfin Lace Pattern: Featured in the center panel, this pattern complements the Flemish Braid and contributes to the overall cohesive design.

Advanced decrease techniques employed throughout include sk2p (slip one, knit two together, pass the slipped stitch over the new stitch created) and s2kp (slip two stitches as if to knit two together, knit one, pass both stitches over the new stitch), which create decorative decreases essential to lace knitting. Yarn overs are used extensively to create the open, airy quality characteristic of lace shawls. Stitch markers are utilized to help track pattern repeats and maintain accuracy throughout the project.

Materials and Specifications

The Change of Scenery Wrap is designed to be worked with Knitpicks Gloss Lace Yarn in the Marina colorway (#25919). This yarn is composed of 70 percent Merino Wool and 30 percent Silk, offering a luxurious blend that provides both warmth and drape. The yarn is supplied at 440 yards per 50-gram hank, and the pattern requires 2 hanks to complete the project, providing approximately 880 yards of working yarn. Knitting needles in US size 3 (3.25 millimeters) are specified for this project. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and waste yarn for the provisional cast-on technique.

Gauge and Fit

One repeat of the Flemish Braid pattern measures 5 inches by 2 inches (13 by 5 centimeters). Notably, gauge is not critical for this wrap project, making it more forgiving for knitters and allowing for greater flexibility in yarn substitution, provided the fiber content and yardage requirements are met.
