Product Description

“Welcome to Jurisfiction,” said the Cheshire Cat. “You’ll like it here, everyone is quite mad.” -Lost in a Good Book, by Jasper Fforde *

Literary heroine Thursday Next has a lot on her plate: As an agent specializing in literary crimes, she might be found tracking down forged Shakespeare folios, standing in as a ‘Jurisfiction’ agent apprehending criminals inside the literary world, or even grappling with the occasional bit of time travel. If anyone needs a knitted cardigan with cozy, twisty-turny, show-off cables, it’s Ms. Next.

The Jurisfiction cardi is worked flat in pieces from the bottom up and later seamed, and finished with a button-band and folded over collar. Worked in your favourite colour of Cascade 220 or 220 Heathers (or your preferred worsted weight wool), this cardigan is a comfortable and versatile staple for your fall and winter wardrobe.

MATERIALS • Cascade 220 Heathers 100% Peruvian highland wool, 220 yds/201m per 100g, 6(7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10) skeins (shown in Cascade 220 Heathers #2425, ‘provence’) • OR your preferred worsted-weight wool yarn in comparable yardage

• 4.5 mm/US 7 needles OR needle size required to obtain gauge

Jurisfiction Cardigan by Glenna C

Garment Overview

Jurisfiction is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan pattern designed by independent designer Glenna C. This downloadable PDF pattern offers seven sizes ranging from extra-small through 3XL, with finished bust measurements of 34 to 55 inches when worn closed. The cardigan is intended to be worn with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease for comfortable, relaxed fit.

Design Features

The cardigan incorporates cable stitch details as a primary design element. The front bands are constructed 1 inch wider than the back when the cardigan is worn closed, creating a structured button closure. The pattern includes provisions for seven buttons, each ¾-inch wide, allowing for a classic buttoned front opening.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The primary stitch used throughout the body is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. Cable stitches are featured as decorative elements, with the pattern providing two cable chart options—Cable Chart A or Cable Chart B—allowing knitters to choose their preferred cable design.

Cable knitting requires the use of a cable needle to create the twisted rope-like texture characteristic of cable stitches. The cable sections measure 3.75 inches across when worked on the specified needles and after finishing.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Jurisfiction is designed for aran-weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category ideal for creating fabric with good drape and structure. The pattern was developed using Cascade 220 Heathers, a 100% Peruvian highland wool yarn offering 220 yards per 100-gram skein. Yardage requirements vary by size: XS and S require 6 skeins, M through XL require 7 to 8 skeins, and 2XL and 3XL require 9 to 10 skeins. The sample cardigan shown was knitted in Cascade 220 Heathers colorway #2425 'Provence'. Knitters may substitute any preferred worsted-weight wool yarn of similar yardage and weight specifications.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for two needle sizes to create proper fabric structure and finishing:

  • 4.5mm/US 7 needles for the main body and cable sections
  • 4.0mm/US 6 needles (one size smaller) for ribbed edges and finishing details

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern. The target gauge is 18 stitches and 25 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch when worked on 4.5mm/US 7 needles, measured after washing and blocking. Cable sections should measure 20 stitches across 3.75 inches on the same needles after finishing. Knitters should always knit a gauge swatch, wash and block it following yarn care instructions, and adjust needle sizes if necessary to match these specifications.

Additional Notions

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires standard knitting notions including stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and cable placement, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming. Seven buttons measuring ¾-inch wide are needed for the front closure, or knitters may substitute their preferred button quantity and size based on personal preference and available button inventory.
