Product Description
This is the June 2013 pattern for the Twisted Head to Toe Club.
My second babygirl’s birthday is June 2nd. This is the June pattern for the 2013 Twisted Head to Toe Club. I love the name Juno and was thinking about it for this shawlette. When I discovered that Juno Lucina was an aspect of the goddess Juno associated with light and childbirth, the stars aligned, and I realized this was the perfect name for this shawlette.
Construction-wise, this shawlette is fun to make and wear. The rate of increase is a bit different than much of what I’ve done in the past, so it’s got much longer arms. It’s great for wrapping around yourself during the yo-yo weather patterns of Spring.
Yardage Requirements – color A: 400 yards; color B: 75 yards; color C: 300 yards. Skill level - Advanced beginner (following a lace pattern, I-cord bind off). Size/Finished measurements – 84” across, 22” deep at center.
Juno Lucina Shawlette by Shannon Squire
What is Being Made
The Juno Lucina is a triangular shawlette designed by Shannon Squire, a downloadable knitting pattern for an elegant wrap. This crescent-shaped accessory measures 84 inches across the top edge with a center depth of 22 inches, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Finished Measurements and Sizing
The completed shawlette spans 84 inches across the top and reaches 22 inches deep at the center point, providing generous coverage as a shoulder wrap or decorative shawl.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern is classified as advanced beginner level and incorporates fundamental shawlette construction techniques. Knitters will work with increasing to create the triangular shape and follow a lace pattern throughout the design. The pattern employs standard shawlette methodology, building from a small number of stitches and expanding outward through strategic increases to achieve the final dimensions.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
- Knit stitch (k) – the foundational knit stitch
- Stockinette stitch – smooth, flat fabric used as the base gauge measurement
- Knit one through back loop (k1-tbl) – twisted stitch variation for textural detail
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used in lace patterning
- Lace pattern – openwork design elements created through yarn overs and decreases
Yarn and Materials
The Juno Lucina requires approximately 775 yards of fingering-weight yarn divided across three coordinating colors. The pattern specifies: Color A at 400 yards, Color B at 75 yards, and Color C at 300 yards. The sample shown uses Knitted Wit Featherweight in the colorways Golden Delicious (Color A), Carbon (Color B), and Beaujolais (Color C), demonstrating how color blocking creates visual interest in the shawlette design.
Needles required include one US 5 (3.75mm) circular needle measuring 24 inches or longer, sized to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends during finishing.
Gauge
The pattern calls for 22 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking. The designer notes that gauge is not crucial for this project, offering flexibility for knitters working with different yarn weights or seeking personalized sizing adjustments.
