What is Being Made

The Juno Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted cowl designed by woolture by Natalia Voitcenko. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished cowl garment suitable for knitters with foundational skills and some experience working with cables and circular knitting techniques.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern incorporates several essential knitting techniques that build upon basic skills:

  • Knitting in the round – The cowl is constructed using circular needles to create a seamless, tubular fabric
  • Cable knitting – Basic cable stitches are featured as a primary design element, adding texture and visual interest
  • Decreasing – The k2tog (knit two together) decrease is used within the pattern
  • Cast on and bind off – Standard techniques for beginning and finishing the project

Additional techniques beyond these core skills are explained within the pattern instructions, making it accessible for intermediate knitters looking to expand their technical repertoire.

Stitches Used

The Juno Cowl employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable work:

  • Knit stitch – The primary stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl stitch – Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and stitch definition
  • Cable stitches – Basic cables that form the decorative pattern elements
  • K2tog (knit two together) – A decrease stitch used for shaping

The pattern works at a stockinette gauge of 15 stitches and 23 rows per 10 cm (4 inches), which helps determine the finished dimensions and fit of the cowl.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Juno Cowl is designed to be completed with exactly 1 skein of Feeling Good Yarn by Wool and the Gang (130 m/142 yds) in aran weight. This yarn weight provides excellent stitch definition for cable work while maintaining a comfortable drape for a cowl garment.

The pattern calls for 5 mm (US size 8) circular needles measuring 40 cm (16 inches) in length, which is the standard needle size for working with aran-weight yarn at the specified gauge. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, five stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, and optionally a cable needle for managing cable stitches and a round counter for tracking rows.

For knitters with a looser tension, keeping a second skein of yarn available is recommended as a precaution. The pattern works best with yarns of similar texture to the original specification. Knitters seeking yarn alternatives are encouraged to visit yarnsub.com and select substitutes with a "blown / fiber-filled net" texture and matching gauge. Tested alternatives include Katia Cotton Merino and Loops and Threads Metallic Luxe, providing options for different fiber content and aesthetic preferences.
