Product Description
Knitting Pattern PDF to make a bear and a fox in jumpers.
All parts are knitted flat and sewn up at the end.
The project requires small amounts of yarn. Feel free to use your stash.
The jumper is a simple square wrapped around the body. The jumper is seamed at the back. The arms and sleeves are worked separately and sewn over the jumper; hence, the jumper is not removable but easier to make.
The cable pattern is repeated only a few times. If you do not have a cable needle, use a short DPN.
Jumper Bear and Fox Knitting Pattern by Sachiyo Ishii
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern creates two charming toy animals: a bear and a fox, both designed to wear matching jumpers. The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters and produces small, finished pieces measuring approximately 5 to 15 centimeters in size.
What Is Being Made
The pattern includes instructions for knitting two distinct stuffed toy animals—a bear and a fox—each complete with their own fitted jumper garments. These are small decorative or play toys that combine animal body construction with miniature clothing elements, making them ideal for gift-giving or collection purposes.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern uses West Yorkshire Spinners Elements DK yarn, a blend of 60% Lyocell and 40% Falkland Islands Wool. This DK weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition for small-scale work. The project requires minimal yardage, using no more than one ball each of the following colors:
- [A] 1139 Pebble Shore – 20g (approximately 244 meters)
- [B] 1141 Caribbean Sea – 20g
- [C] 1143 Sweet Nectar – 10g
- [D] 1145 Watermelon – 5g
- [E] 1138 Ocean Spray – 3g
Additional materials include dark brown and pink 4-ply fingering yarn for embellishment details, toy stuffing for padding the animals, four 4mm mushroom-shaped eye beads, cotton thread for assembly, and a 25mm pompom maker or fork for creating decorative pompoms.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires 2.75mm and 3mm knitting needles for working the DK weight yarn. Additional tools include a stitch holder for managing active stitches, a cable needle for cable stitch techniques, and a chenille needle for sewing seams and attaching components.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate pattern employs several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques to construct the toys and their garments:
- Stocking Stitch (St st) – The primary fabric construction method, creating a smooth, uniform surface ideal for toy bodies and jumper pieces
- Knit and Purl Stitches – Basic stitches used throughout for shaping and texture variation
- Increases (Kfb) – Knit one stitch through the front and then through the back of the same stitch to add stitches for shaping curved toy bodies
- Decreases (K2tog, P2tog, Skpo) – Knit two together, purl two together, and slip-knit-pass-over techniques used for shaping and tapering
- Cable Stitches (C3R) – Cable techniques such as slip next 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold at back of work, then knit 1 stitch followed by knitting the 2 cable needle stitches, creating textured cable details on the jumpers
Construction and Assembly
The pattern incorporates strategic construction methods for toy making. Long yarn ends are left at the beginning and end of pieces specifically for sewing components together. The animals are assembled by seaming pieces with a chenille needle, and toy stuffing is inserted to create three-dimensional form. Eyes are secured using the mushroom-shaped beads, and embellishments such as pompoms are attached using cotton thread for durability.
Pattern Abbreviations Reference
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including RS (right side), WS (wrong side), RH (right hand), LH (left hand), St(s) (stitch or stitches), K (knit), P (purl), Rep (repeat), and cable-specific notations for clear instruction following.
