Product Description
This sweet little baby romper will be an essential staple in your baby’s wardrobe!
The pattern has been written in 4 different sizes from newborn through to 12 months.
The tension has been set at 16 tks x 20 rows to measure 10 x 10 cm. The tension has been measured over Tunisian knit stitch. I used 7 mm crochet hook to create a gorgeous smooth texture that looks like knit.
For the newborn size I used 2 balls of Cygnet Cottony DK which is a lovely cotton blend yarn.
Joni Romper by Veronika Cromwell
What is Being Made
The Joni Romper is a crocheted playsuit designed for babies in newborn through 6-12 months sizes. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a charming one-piece garment that combines comfort with playful design, perfect for warm weather dressing or layering. The romper features a fitted bodice and leg openings, with finished chest circumferences ranging from 36 cm for newborn to 48 cm for 6-12 months, and lengths from 32 cm to 40 cm depending on size.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Joni Romper is constructed using Tunisian crochet as the primary technique, which creates a fabric with characteristics between traditional crochet and knitting. This method produces a denser, more structured fabric ideal for garment construction. The pattern employs a 7 mm Tunisian crochet hook for the main fabric work, with finishing details completed using a 4.5 mm standard crochet hook. The use of two different hook sizes allows for proper tension control and refined finishing elements.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches and techniques suited to intermediate-level crafters:
- Chain stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create the base of the pattern
- Tunisian knit stitch (tks) – the primary stitch creating the main fabric texture and structure
- Increases (inc) – worked on edges by inserting the hook under the connecting horizontal bar, yarning over, pulling through, and leaving the loop on hook; all increases in this pattern are positioned before the first and last stitches for shaping
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Joni Romper pattern calls for Cygnet Yarns Cottony DK yarn in the Cornflower colorway. The yarn composition is 46% cotton, 46% acrylic, and 8% viscose, creating a breathable, durable blend ideal for baby garments. Each ball contains 111 meters of yarn and weighs 50 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size: newborn requires 2 balls, while sizes 0-3 months, 3-6 months, and 6-12 months each require 3, 4, and 4 balls respectively. The DK (double knitting) weight provides a lightweight fabric suitable for delicate baby clothing.
Additional Materials and Finishing
Beyond yarn and hooks, the pattern requires a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming, standard scissors for yarn cutting, and 2 x 10 mm buttons for functional closures. These finishing touches add both practical and decorative elements to the completed romper.
Gauge and Sizing Information
The pattern specifies a tension of 16 stitches x 20 rows measuring 10 x 10 cm using the Tunisian knit stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating a garment that fits correctly across all size options. The finished sample photographed in the pattern is the newborn size.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Joni Romper is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction and Tunisian crochet techniques. The pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet fundamentals while introducing the slightly more advanced Tunisian knit stitch method.
