Product Description
This is my personal favorite of the Best Buds' cowls. Miranda, the sparkling red-headed model, is a vivacious girlie girl with a dramatic flare. I do believe we will see her in the spot light on stage down the road. This cowl, worked in the round from the bottom, features a combination of stockinette stitch and a squishy textured stitch throughout the body. Eyelets on one side are cinched together with an i-cord ribbon. The combination of the side ruching, big bow and different stitch pattern make this cowl perfect for that little starlet in your life.

Jeannie Cowl by Meg Roke
What is Being Made
Jeannie is a knitted cowl designed by Meg Roke, available in both child and adult sizes. This project creates a cozy, wearable accessory that is knit in the round from the bottom up. The finished cowl measures approximately 22 (25)" [56 (63.5 cm)] in circumference and 7 (8)" [18 (20.5 cm)] in height for child and adult sizes respectively.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The cowl is constructed using circular knitting, worked in the round from the bottom up, which creates a seamless, tubular garment. The pattern incorporates wet blocking as the finishing method, which is noted as the designer's preferred blocking technique. Wet blocking allows the cowl to grow and reach its final dimensions, making it an essential step for achieving the correct finished measurements. Knitters are advised to knit and block a gauge swatch first using the same blocking method to ensure accuracy before beginning the main project.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern used throughout Jeannie is double seed stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric. This stitch pattern is worked over the circular needles and requires attention to gauge, with the pattern calling for 14 stitches and 20 rows to measure 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in double seed stitch on US 9 (5.5 mm) needles.
Materials and Yarn
Jeannie is designed to use aran weight yarn in two colors. The pattern calls for approximately 110 (130) yards of aran weight yarn in the main color (MC) and approximately 8 (15) yards of aran weight yarn in the contrasting color (CC). The sample shown was knitted using Osprey from Quince & Co., which is 100% American wool, with 170 yards (155 m) per 100 g (3.5 oz) skein. The sample was completed using 1 skein in Lichen for the main color and 1 skein in Sorbet for the contrasting color.
Needles and Notions
This project requires US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles in a 16 (24)" length, or the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. Additionally, US 8 (5.5 mm) double-pointed needles are listed in the materials, and a tapestry needle is needed for finishing. Stitch markers are required to track pattern repeats and round beginnings when working in the round.
