Java Beans Socks by Twin Stitches Designs
What Is Being Made
Java Beans is a downloadable knitting pattern for cozy, comfortable socks designed by Twin Stitches Designs. Inspired by the stress of exam season at Hogwarts, these socks are intended to provide comfort and warmth when you need a caffeine boost. The pattern is available in three sizes to fit Women's Small, Women's Medium, and Women's Large feet, with foot circumferences ranging from approximately 6.7 to 8.5 inches (17 to 21.5 cm).
Pattern Structure and Design
Java Beans features a unique two-weight construction that allows knitters to choose their preferred yarn weight and customize their finished socks. The pattern is divided into two distinct sections, each optimized for a different yarn weight. This flexible approach makes the pattern accessible to knitters who have different yarn weights in their stash and prefer varying levels of drape and warmth in their finished socks.
Yarn Weight Options
This pattern accommodates two yarn weight categories, giving knitters flexibility in their material choices:
- Sport Weight Section: Pages 3-4 of the pattern are designed for sport weight yarn, with stitch counts of 44 (48, 56) stitches across the three sizes
- Fingering Weight Section: Pages 5-6 are designed for fingering weight yarn, with stitch counts of 56 (64, 72) stitches across the three sizes
Knitters will need approximately 100 grams of either sport weight or fingering weight yarn to complete the socks. The sample was knit using Olan yarn.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern requires different needle sizes depending on which yarn weight is selected. For fingering weight yarn, use US 1 / 2.25mm needles or the size needed to obtain correct gauge. For sport weight yarn, use US 2 / 2.75mm needles or the size needed to obtain correct gauge. Obtaining proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished foot circumference.
Difficulty Level
Java Beans is rated as a beginner-level sock pattern, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to sock construction. The pattern provides an easy-to-follow design that can be worked on the go, allowing knitters to enjoy portable, meditative knitting while creating a practical, wearable garment.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
While specific stitch abbreviations and techniques are referenced in the pattern pages, Java Beans employs standard sock knitting construction methods. The pattern is designed to teach fundamental sock-making skills in an accessible way, making it suitable for knitters building their sock-knitting experience. The two-weight option allows knitters to practice gauge adjustment and needle sizing—important foundational skills in knitting.
