Ivy Towers Dishcloth by Deb Buckingham

What Is Being Made

The Ivy Towers Dishcloth is a beginner-friendly knitted dishcloth designed by Deb Buckingham of Knit On Designs. This project creates a finished square measuring approximately 8.5" x 8.5", making it a practical kitchen textile that is durable, textured, and decorative enough to display as part of your home décor. The dishcloth is versatile and designed to complement any interior style.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary technique involves working with knit and purl stitches in a structured sequence. The pattern uses a method where you knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches on one row, then reverse this on the following row—knitting the opposite of what you just completed. This back-and-forth reversal of knit and purl stitches creates the textured appearance characteristic of the Ivy Towers design. The pattern is straightforward enough for new knitters to build confidence while producing a finished item with visual interest and practical durability.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K)—The fundamental knit stitch, worked as indicated in the pattern
  • Purl (P)—The basic purl stitch, creating texture when alternated with knit stitches

The pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches across rows, with the sequence reversed on subsequent rows to build the textured pattern.

Materials Required

Knitting Needles: US 6 (4 mm) needles are recommended for this project. The pattern notes that you may also use US 7 or US 8 needles if you prefer the resulting gauge.

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn is specified for this dishcloth. The sample shown in the pattern was knit using Sugar 'n Cream 100% USA Cotton yarn, which provides 120 yards per skein. This cotton yarn choice makes the dishcloth particularly suitable for kitchen use, as cotton is absorbent and durable for repeated washing and use.
