Isbryder Boy's Version Knit Sweater by HelstrupDesign

What is Being Made

Isbryder is a children's knit sweater inspired by the Danish word for "icebreaker." This downloadable knitting pattern is designed for boys in five size options ranging from 4 years through 14 years old. The finished sweater features a chest width ranging from 71 centimeters (size 4) to 107 centimeters (size 14), with corresponding lengths from 43 centimeters to 61 centimeters. The pattern includes detailed finished measurements for each size to ensure proper fit.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This advanced-level knitting project uses circular needle construction for seamless knitting in the round. The sweater is worked from the body upward, beginning with a loose cast-on of 128 to 192 stitches depending on the size being knitted. The pattern employs circular needles in two sizes—a 60 or 80 centimeter needle for the main body and a 40 centimeter needle (or double-pointed needles as an alternative) for smaller circumference sections such as the neckline and cuffs. This construction method minimizes seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish typical of modern knitwear design.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used in Isbryder is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat face and textured reverse side. The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 27 rows over a 10 by 10 centimeter swatch in stockinette stitch, making accurate gauge measurement essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. Knitters are advised to always use a needle size that produces this exact gauge, as individual knitting tension varies from person to person.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Isbryder is designed to be knit with aran-weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and relatively quick project completion. The pattern recommends wool yarn with approximately 90 meters per 50 grams, with specific yarn suggestions including Jamieson's Shetland Heather, Peer Gynt from Sandnes, or Mor Aase from Sandnes. The size 8/10 years pictured sample was knit using yarn from Sandnes.

Yarn Requirements by Size:

  • Size 4 years: Main color 200–250 grams; Contrast colors 50–100 grams
  • Size 6 years: Main color 200–250 grams; Contrast colors 100–150 grams
  • Size 8/10 years: Main color 250–300 grams; Contrast colors 100–150 grams
  • Size 12 years: Main color 300–350 grams; Contrast colors 150–200 grams
  • Size 14 years: Main color 350–400 grams; Contrast colors 150–200 grams

Needles and Notions

The pattern calls for 3½ millimeter circular needles in two lengths to accommodate different sections of the garment. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends after completion. These tools are essential for executing the seamless in-the-round construction and finishing the sweater to a professional standard.

Difficulty Level

Isbryder is classified as an advanced knitting project, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with circular needle techniques, gauge management, and reading detailed pattern instructions. The use of contrast colors and the requirement for precise gauge make this pattern best suited to knitters with solid foundational skills.
