Product Description
"Spanish version begins on page 12"
This is a great beginner project. As a wonderful introduction to creating a crocheted garment, the combination of a classic granny square and single crochet will be rewarding to the beginner to advanced crafter. The Granny Squares are created and then either “sewn together” or “joined together as you crochet” into a strip. Once the strip is created and the length matches the bottom of the cardigan, it is sewn or crocheted onto the cardigan. There is very little sewing. I love to sew, just not after all that work. It seems that it takes just as long to sew as it does to crochet or knit, so let’s make it “Seamlessly Simple”™.
Isabella Crochet Granny Cardigan by Elizabeth Calabro
What is Being Made
The Isabella Crochet Granny Cardigan is a crocheted cardigan sweater designed as part of the "Seamlessly Simple"™ collection by Elizabeth Calabro. This garment combines classic granny square motifs with single crochet construction to create a versatile, wearable piece. The cardigan is available in multiple sizes ranging from 6 months through 8 years, making it suitable for infants and children. The design philosophy emphasizes minimal finishing work, reducing the amount of sewing required after the main crochet work is completed.
Construction Method
The Isabella Cardigan is crocheted in one continuous piece, working from the back to the front. This seamless construction approach minimizes the need for seaming and joining multiple pieces together. The garment incorporates granny squares as a primary design element, which are created separately and then combined into a strip formation. Crafters have the flexibility to join these squares using either traditional sewing methods or by crocheting them together as they work. Once the granny square strip reaches the appropriate length to match the bottom edge of the cardigan, it is attached to the main body using either sewing or crochet joining techniques.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
- Granny Squares: The foundational motif of this design, providing both structure and visual interest to the finished cardigan
- Single Crochet: Used throughout the construction to create the main body of the cardigan and to join components
- Join-as-you-crochet Method: An optional technique allowing crafters to attach granny squares without separate sewing steps
- Sewing: Traditional finishing method for attaching granny square strips, though the design minimizes this requirement
Yarn and Materials
The Isabella Crochet Granny Cardigan is designed to be worked with DK weight or sport weight yarn, providing flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining consistent drape and fit. The pattern includes specific instructions for multiple sizes, requiring crafters to have appropriate crochet hooks suitable for their chosen yarn weight. The downloadable PDF format includes comprehensive abbreviations guide and detailed directional instructions to support crafters at all skill levels.
Skill Level
Classified as an intermediate difficulty project, the Isabella Cardigan serves as an excellent introduction to garment construction for beginner to advanced crocheters. While the pattern is described as "a great beginner project," the intermediate designation reflects the skills required to manage granny square assembly, maintain consistent tension, and execute the one-piece construction method. The pattern encourages thorough review of all directions before beginning and emphasizes becoming familiar with crochet abbreviations prior to starting the project.
Design Philosophy
The "Seamlessly Simple"™ design approach prioritizes efficient construction by reducing post-crochet finishing work. Rather than requiring extensive sewing after completion, the pattern integrates joining techniques directly into the crochet process. This philosophy recognizes that finishing work can be equally time-consuming as the initial crochet work, making integrated construction methods more practical and rewarding for crafters.
