Product Description

These midweight mittens in three sizes (S/M/L) feature textures inspired by shells and a sassy tilted cuff. The knitting fun starts with an asymmetrical garter stitch cuff shaped in short rows, then moves up to a panel of welting pattern worked in knit and purl which brings to mind the ebb and flow of the tide. The design is compatible with solids as well as softly shaded self-striping or gradient yarn and variegated yarns with longer color runs. Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size and elasticity.

samples shown are size small and size medium knit in Feederbrook Farm Entropy, colorway Magnetic Flux, custom-dyed.

Intertidal Mittens by Anne Hanson

What Is Being Made

Intertidal is a downloadable knitting pattern for midweight mittens designed by Anne Hanson. The pattern includes instructions for three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. These mittens feature textural elements inspired by seashells and coastal imagery, with a distinctive tilted cuff that adds a playful, asymmetrical design element to the finished garment.

Design Features and Inspiration

The mittens draw aesthetic inspiration from tidal and intertidal zones, translating natural coastal textures into knitted fabric. The design incorporates visual references to shells and the rhythmic patterns created by the ebb and flow of tides. The tilted cuff is a signature design feature that gives these mittens personality and movement, distinguishing them from traditional mitten silhouettes.

Knitting Techniques Used

The construction of Intertidal mittens employs several intermediate knitting techniques that remain accessible to beginner-level knitters:

  • Short-row shaping: The asymmetrical garter stitch cuff is created using short rows, a technique that adds depth and dimension to the cuff while creating the tilted effect
  • Textural patterning: A welting pattern worked in alternating knit and purl stitches creates the main body of the mittens, producing a ribbed, dimensional surface that evokes tidal movement
  • Colorwork compatibility: The pattern is designed to work beautifully with various yarn types, including solid colors, self-striping yarns with soft shading, gradient yarns, and variegated yarns with longer color runs, allowing knitters to customize their finished mittens

Stitches Used

The stitch work in Intertidal mittens is straightforward and beginner-friendly, utilizing fundamental knitting stitches combined in strategic ways:

  • Garter stitch: Used for the cuff, created by knitting every row, producing a bumpy, textured fabric with excellent elasticity
  • Knit and purl stitches: Combined in a welting pattern throughout the main body of the mittens, where alternating rows of knit and purl create raised horizontal lines that mimic natural shell and tidal textures

Yarn and Materials

Intertidal mittens are designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a midweight that provides good stitch definition for the textural patterns while remaining quick to knit. The pattern requires approximately 75 yards of yarn per mitten.

Suggested yarn options include:

  • Feederbrook Farm Entropy DK
  • Feederbrook Farm Common Ground
  • Bare Naked Wools Stone Soup DK
  • Kent DK
  • Ghillie Sport/DK
  • Better Breakfast DK
  • Briar Rose Nate's Yarn
  • Mountain Meadow Wool Cody
  • Fleece Artist Blue Face Leicester DK
  • Miss Babs Northumbria DK
  • Hedgehog Fibres Blue Faced DK
  • Any soft, bouncy wool DK-weight yarn with similar yardage

The pattern recommends using soft, bouncy wool yarns that provide elasticity and comfort. Knitters should note that substituting yarn and/or needles may result in overall variation in size and elasticity of the finished mittens, so gauge swatching is recommended before beginning the project.

Difficulty Level

Intertidal mittens are rated as a beginner difficulty project. While the pattern incorporates short-row shaping and textural stitch patterns, these techniques are presented in an accessible way that allows newer knitters to expand their skills while still completing a satisfying, wearable project.
