Integral Mitts by Danielle Chalson
What is Being Made
Integral Mitts are unisex and utilitarian hand warmers designed to provide comfort during winter winds and early spring chills. These are fingerless mitts available in three sizes: Teen/Adult S, Adult M, and Adult L, with hand circumferences ranging from 5½ – 6½ inches up to 8 – 9 inches. The finished length varies from 8½ inches in the smallest size to 9¾ inches in the largest, making them versatile layering pieces for cold-weather wear.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Integral Mitts are worked from the bottom cuff upwards using a straightforward top-down construction method. This approach allows knitters to try on the mitts as they progress and easily adjust the final length to personal preference. The design features a distinctive lush lattice-like texture that creates visual interest while maintaining functionality. The mitts are engineered to fit snugly with ½ – 1½ inches of negative ease through the hand, ensuring they stay in place during active wear without restricting circulation.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The lattice-like texture is the signature stitch element of these mitts, creating an open, decorative pattern that allows for breathability while maintaining warmth. This textured stitch pattern adds visual depth and sophistication to what would otherwise be a simple utilitarian design, elevating the mitts beyond basic hand coverings.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Integral Mitts are knit using aran-weight yarn, a medium-heavy yarn weight that provides substantial warmth and a cushy, comfortable gauge. The pattern calls for approximately 110 yards in the Teen/Adult S size, 125 yards for Adult M, and 165 yards for Adult L, with each 100-gram skein containing approximately 165 yards. The sample shown was created in Madelinetosh Chunky, a 100% merino wool yarn that offers softness, breathability, and excellent temperature regulation. The merino fiber content ensures the mitts remain comfortable against skin while providing reliable insulation.
