This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia William Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern is designed by an independent designer and offers multiple size options to accommodate growing children. The sweater is worked primarily in stockinette stitch with ribbed edgings, creating a classic, versatile garment suitable for everyday wear.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's pullover sweater with set-in armholes and crew neckline. The garment features the William Moniker intarsia chart as the primary design element, which is worked into the body of the sweater during knitting. The pattern includes shaping for the back, front, and sleeves, with multiple size options to fit different age ranges and measurements.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia colorwork: The William Moniker chart is incorporated using the intarsia technique, which involves knitting with multiple colors by carrying separate yarn bobbins for each color section rather than stranding yarn across the back of the work. This creates a smooth, flat fabric ideal for pictorial designs.
- Armhole shaping: Decreases are worked at the beginning of rows to create fitted armholes that measure between 10 and 14 centimeters (4 to 5½ inches) depending on size.
- Ribbed edgings: 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) is used for the cuffs and lower body, providing elasticity and a finished appearance.
- Stitch holder technique: Stitches are placed on holders during construction, allowing for later finishing of neckline or other details.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the main body of the sweater, created by alternating knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, flat fabric that showcases the intarsia design.
- 2x2 ribbing: A knit 2, purl 2 pattern worked over multiple rows to create the ribbed edgings at the cuffs and lower body. This stitch is elastic and helps the garment maintain its shape.
- Purl 2 together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the garment, particularly during armhole and waist shaping.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main body knitting in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, allowing for the proper gauge and fabric density. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The intarsia colorwork technique requires familiarity with managing multiple yarn bobbins and reading a chart, while the shaping instructions demand attention to detail and understanding of standard knitting abbreviations and techniques.
Pattern Structure
The pattern provides multiple size options, indicated by bracketed measurements throughout the instructions (for example, [25:29:29:33] sts represents different stitch counts for different sizes). The sweater is constructed in separate pieces—back, front, and sleeves—which are then assembled. The pattern includes detailed row-by-row instructions for shaping armholes, managing the intarsia design placement, and finishing the garment.
