Intarsia - Venus Chart - Children's Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a children's pullover sweater featuring an intarsia design chart depicting Venus. The sweater is designed for children aged 2 to 13 years, with six size options ranging from a 61cm chest fit (age 2-3) to an 85cm chest fit (age 12-13). The garment offers actual measurements from 65cm to 89cm across the chest, with full lengths ranging from 38cm to 58cm depending on the child's age and size.

Intarsia Technique

Intarsia is a color-work knitting technique that creates large pictorial designs by knitting different colored yarns into the fabric. Unlike stranded colorwork methods that carry yarn across the back, intarsia uses separate lengths of yarn for each color block, creating a single-thickness fabric with no floats on the reverse side. This technique is ideal for designs with large areas of solid color, such as the Venus chart featured in this sweater. The intarsia method requires careful attention to color placement and yarn management to ensure clean color transitions and a professional finished appearance.

Stitches Used

This sweater is worked primarily in stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), the fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. Stocking stitch provides a smooth, flat canvas that showcases the intarsia Venus design beautifully. The pattern includes the use of stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches during construction, a standard technique for shaping necklines and managing stitches between pattern sections.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern uses DK weight yarn (double knitting), specifically estimated using Stylecraft Special DK with a yardage of 295 meters per 100g ball. The main shade requires between 2 to 4 balls depending on the child's size, with additional oddments of contrast shades needed for the intarsia Venus design as specified in the chart. Knitters will need two pairs of needles: 4mm (UK size 8 / USA size 6) needles for the main fabric and 3¼mm (UK size 10 / USA size 3) needles for ribbed edgings. Two stitch holders are also required for managing stitches during construction.

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit across all six size options. The pattern includes guidance for adjusting needle size if your tension differs: use a thinner needle if you have fewer stitches, or a thicker needle if you have more stitches than specified.

Sizing and Adjustability

The sweater accommodates six age ranges with corresponding chest measurements and finished lengths. Sleeve length is noted as adjustable, allowing customization based on individual arm length requirements. The pattern provides clear measurement specifications for each size option, enabling knitters to select the appropriate size for their intended recipient.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the skills required to execute intarsia colorwork while managing the basic construction of a children's sweater. Knitters should be comfortable with fundamental techniques including casting on, working stocking stitch, shaping with increases and decreases, and following a color chart.
