Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Sebastian Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork. The design incorporates the Sebastian moniker chart, allowing for personalized name integration into the garment. The pattern is graded across multiple sizes to accommodate growing children, making it a versatile project for young wearers.
What is Being Made
A fitted children's sweater constructed with a classic two-piece construction consisting of a back and front panel. The sweater features set-in armholes and includes ribbed edging at the cuffs and hem for a polished finish. The intarsia chart allows crafters to incorporate the Sebastian name or moniker into the sweater design, creating a personalized garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique for this sweater. Intarsia involves knitting with multiple colors using separate yarn lengths for different colored sections, creating a picture or pattern (in this case, the Sebastian moniker chart) that is knitted directly into the fabric rather than applied afterward.
Armhole Shaping: The pattern includes structured armhole decreases worked at the beginning of rows to create fitted sleeve openings. Decreases are worked consistently across multiple rows to achieve proper garment fit and silhouette.
Ribbed Edging: The sweater utilizes 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2 repeat) at the cuffs and hem, which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic fabric suitable for displaying the intarsia colorwork
- 2x2 Ribbing: A knit 2, purl 2 repeat pattern worked over multiple rows to create stretchy edging
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A left-leaning decrease used for shaping the armholes and other decreases
- Knit Stitches: Standard knit stitches form the foundation of the stockinette stitch fabric
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Weight: 4-ply yarn is specified for this project. This lightweight yarn weight creates a refined, smooth fabric ideal for children's garments and allows for detailed colorwork definition when working the intarsia chart.
Needles: The pattern calls for two needle sizes. Size 2¾mm needles are used for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, while size 3¼mm needles are used for the main stockinette stitch body. This needle size progression helps create a tighter, more elastic ribbed edge that contrasts with the slightly looser gauge of the main fabric.
Yarn Amounts: Yarn requirements are based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn. The pattern provides multiple size options, with yarn quantities varying accordingly to accommodate the different finished dimensions for each size.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern is graded across multiple children's sizes, indicated by the bracketed numbers throughout the instructions (such as [25:29:29:33]). Each size has specific stitch counts and row counts to ensure proper fit across the range of garment dimensions. The back panel is worked first, followed by the front panel, with both pieces shaped at the armholes before finishing.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic construction uses fundamental knitting stitches and techniques, the intarsia colorwork requires attention to color changes, proper tension management across multiple yarn colors, and careful stitch counting to maintain pattern accuracy. Knitters should be comfortable with basic shaping techniques and able to read and follow a detailed chart before undertaking this project.
