Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Rob Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater designed using the intarsia knitting technique. The pattern provides instructions for creating a pullover garment with a coordinated front and back, featuring shaping at the armholes and a ribbed neckline finish. The design includes multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements.
Techniques Used
The primary construction method is intarsia knitting, which allows for the incorporation of a detailed chart design (the Rob Moniker Chart) into the sweater body. This technique involves working with separate yarn colors or sections to create a pictorial or patterned motif on the finished garment.
Additional shaping techniques include armhole decreasing, where stitches are reduced at the beginning of rows to form fitted armholes, and ribbed edging for structure and elasticity at the neckline and cuffs. The pattern uses standard increases and decreases to achieve proper garment fit across multiple size ranges.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st) – The primary stitch throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- 2x2 Ribbing – A knit-purl combination (K2, P2 repeat) used for the neckline and edge finishing to provide stretch and structure
- Purl Stitches (p) – Used in ribbed sections and for specific shaping rows
- Knit Stitches (k) – The foundation stitch for stockinette sections
- Decreases (p2tog) – Purl two together decreases used for armhole shaping and stitch reduction
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which produces a lightweight, finely-detailed fabric ideal for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main body work in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, allowing for proper gauge and fabric elasticity.
The yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn weight. Cast-on counts range from 70 stitches for smaller sizes to 102 stitches for larger sizes, with corresponding adjustments in row counts to maintain proper proportions across the size range.
Pattern Difficulty
This pattern is rated as intermediate level, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction techniques. The intarsia chart work requires attention to color changes and stitch placement, while the armhole shaping and multiple size options demand careful row counting and stitch management.
