Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia River Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What Is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork with a personalized river moniker chart design. The garment is constructed as a classic pullover with front and back panels, set-in armholes, and ribbed edging. The intarsia technique allows for custom name or word incorporation into the sweater design using the provided chart, making each finished piece unique to the wearer.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern employs intarsia colorwork, a technique in which different colored yarns are used to create a pictorial or textual design within the knitted fabric. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate yarn bobbins for each color section, preventing long floats across the back of the work and creating a smoother, flatter finished fabric. This technique is ideal for incorporating personalized text or detailed imagery such as the river moniker chart featured in this design.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The sweater is primarily worked in stockinette stitch (st-st), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a defined V-pattern texture. The ribbed edging uses 2x2 rib (alternating knit 2, purl 2), which provides elasticity and a neat finished edge at the cuffs, hem, and neckline.
Key construction details include:
- Cast-on using the thumb method with 70 stitches on 2¾mm needles
- Ribbed cuff worked over 7 rows in 2x2 rib pattern
- Transition to 3¼mm needles for the main body in stockinette stitch
- Armhole shaping achieved through decreases of 1 stitch at each end of every row over 4 to 6 rows depending on size
- Purl 2 together (p2tog) decreases incorporated into the ribbed sections for fitted shaping
- Stitches held on stitch holders for later finishing or seaming
Sizing and Gauge
The pattern is provided in multiple sizes with stitch counts ranging from 25 to 33 stitches for smaller sections and 70 to 102 stitches for the main cast-on, accommodating children of various ages. Row counts vary from 40 to 82 rows depending on the desired length and size. Armhole depth ranges from 10 to 14 centimeters (4 to 5½ inches) across the size range. Proper tension and yarn weight are essential to achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that produces a refined, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The intarsia chart requires multiple colors of 4-ply yarn in matching fiber content and weight to ensure consistent tension and appearance across color changes.
Needles required include:
- 2¾mm needles for the ribbed cuff and initial cast-on
- 3¼mm needles for the main body worked in stockinette stitch
The pattern specifies that yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, emphasizing the importance of gauge swatching before beginning the project.
Intarsia Colorwork Application
The river moniker chart is integrated into the sweater design, allowing knitters to personalize the garment with a specific name or word. When working intarsia sections, knitters will use separate bobbins or lengths of yarn for each color area, twisting the yarns together at color changes to prevent holes in the fabric. This technique requires careful attention to the chart and consistent tension to achieve clean, well-defined color transitions.
