This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Nathan Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment is worked in stockinette stitch with a classic crew neckline and set-in armholes, offering an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with foundational skills in shaping and color techniques.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's pullover sweater with intarsia patterning. The design includes a structured back and front with shaped armholes and a ribbed neckline finish. The pattern provides multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements, with corresponding stitch counts and row adjustments for each size.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia colorwork: The sweater features intarsia technique, which involves knitting separate color sections using individual yarn bobbins or lengths. This creates a design where colors are isolated to specific areas rather than carried across the back of the work, resulting in a flat, professional finish ideal for pictorial or geometric motifs like the Nathan Moniker Chart.
- Armhole shaping: Decreases are worked at each end of rows to create fitted armholes, with specific decrease sequences provided for each size.
- Ribbed edging: A 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) is used for the neckline and lower body, providing elasticity and a finished appearance.
- Stitch holder techniques: Stitches are placed on holders during construction, particularly for neckline shaping and sleeve cap integration.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a V appearance on the right side.
- 2x2 ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches worked in a 2-over-2 pattern for the neckline and cuff areas.
- Purl 2 together (p2tog): A left-leaning decrease used in shaping sequences, particularly visible in the armhole and waist shaping rows.
- Knit stitches: Standard knit stitches form the foundation of the stockinette stitch fabric.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, also known as fingering or sport weight, which creates a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The size range includes multiple options with stitch counts ranging from 70 to 102 cast-on stitches depending on the selected size, accommodating children from smaller to larger measurements. Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn and needles.
Pattern Structure and Difficulty
Rated as an intermediate level project, this sweater requires competency in basic shaping techniques, understanding of tension and gauge, and familiarity with intarsia colorwork methods. The pattern includes detailed row-by-row instructions with size-specific modifications noted in brackets throughout, allowing knitters to customize the finished garment dimensions. The inclusion of the Nathan Moniker Chart intarsia design adds complexity beyond basic stockinette, making this suitable for knitters ready to advance beyond simple garments into structured, patterned pieces.
