Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Matilda Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment is constructed with a traditional sweater structure including a back piece, front piece with integrated chart work, and sleeves. The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different children's measurements, making it a versatile project for creating personalized knitwear with custom moniker details.
Techniques Used
Intarsia Colorwork: The primary decorative technique featured in this pattern. Intarsia is a method of incorporating multiple colors into knitted fabric by using separate lengths of yarn for each color block. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia creates a single-thickness fabric without floats on the reverse side, making it ideal for children's garments where comfort and smooth interior surfaces are important.
Ribbed Edgings: The pattern incorporates 2x2 ribbing (alternating knit 2, purl 2) at the cuffs and hem. This ribbing provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Armhole Shaping: Structured decreases are worked at the armholes to create a fitted sleeve cap and proper garment silhouette. The pattern includes graduated shaping across multiple size options.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance on the right side and bumpy texture on the wrong side.
- 2x2 Ribbing: Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing worked at the lower edge and cuffs for elasticity and definition.
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used for shaping armholes and creating fitted areas.
- Knit Stitches (K): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of stockinette sections.
- Purl Stitches (P): Used in ribbing and shaping sequences.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Weight: This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight fingering to sport weight that creates a refined, drapable fabric suitable for children's garments. The specific yarn amounts vary based on the size being knitted and the tension achieved during knitting.
Needles: The pattern uses two needle sizes. Smaller 2¾mm needles are used for the ribbed edgings to create a tight, elastic finish. Larger 3¼mm needles are used for the main body worked in stockinette stitch, allowing for proper gauge and fabric drape.
Gauge and Tension: Achieving the specified tension is essential for proper fit, particularly important in children's garments. The pattern is written with tension requirements in mind, and substituting yarn or needles without adjusting for gauge may result in sizing issues.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern includes multiple size options, indicated by bracketed numbers throughout the instructions. Sizes range from smaller children's dimensions through larger children's sizes. Each size has graduated stitch counts and row counts to ensure proper proportions across the size range. The back piece is cast on with 70 [78:86:94:102] stitches depending on size, and the front features the intarsia moniker chart integrated into the main stockinette fabric.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, reflecting the combination of basic knitting techniques with the added complexity of intarsia colorwork. Knitters should be comfortable with reading charts, managing multiple yarn colors, and executing shaping decreases before attempting this project.
