Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Mary Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intarsia knitted children's sweater designed by Instarsia. The pattern uses a charted intarsia technique to incorporate a personalized name or moniker into the sweater design, making it a custom and meaningful handmade garment for children. The project is presented as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for intermediate-level knitters.
What Is Being Made
A children's pullover sweater featuring an intarsia chart for adding a custom name or moniker. The sweater is constructed with distinct front and back pieces, shaped armholes, and ribbed cuffs and hem. The garment comes in multiple sizes to accommodate different children's measurements.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia knitting: A color work technique that allows you to knit a personalized name or design into the fabric using separate yarn colors. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses individual bobbins of yarn for each color section, creating a smooth, single-layer fabric without floats on the reverse side.
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a V appearance on the right side.
- 2x2 ribbing: Used for the cuffs, hem, and neckline to create an elastic, fitted finish that helps the sweater hold its shape.
- Armhole shaping: Decreases worked at the beginning of rows to create properly fitted armholes that sit correctly on a child's shoulders.
- Thumb method cast-on: The pattern specifies using the thumb method to cast on stitches, a fundamental technique for creating a flexible foundation edge.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): The fundamental knit stitch
- Purl (p): The reverse of the knit stitch, used in ribbing and texture
- Purl two together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the armholes and create fitted shaping
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): Alternating rows of knit and purl stitches to create the smooth fabric base
- 2x2 rib pattern: A repeating sequence of knit 2, purl 2 stitches that creates the elastic ribbed sections
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, also known as fingering or sport weight yarn. The pattern requires two needle sizes:
- 2¾mm needles: Used for the initial ribbed sections (cuffs and hem) to create a tighter, more elastic fabric
- 3¼mm needles: Used for the main body in stockinette stitch, creating the proper gauge and fabric drape
The pattern includes multiple size options with different stitch counts and row lengths. For example, cast-on stitches range from 70 to 102 stitches depending on size, and armhole shaping varies from 4 to 6 rows of decreases. Finished armhole depths range from 10 to 14 centimeters (approximately 4 to 5½ inches), accommodating children of various ages.
Pattern Structure
The sweater is worked in separate pieces: a back panel and a front panel. The back begins with a 2x2 ribbed cuff worked over 7 rows, followed by stockinette stitch for the body length. The front follows the same construction but incorporates the intarsia chart for the personalized name or moniker. Both pieces include armhole shaping through strategic decreases, and the pattern provides guidance on stitch holder placement for later finishing.
The intarsia chart allows knitters to customize the sweater with a child's name or initials, making this a unique and personalized handmade gift. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the combination of basic shaping techniques and the added complexity of following a color chart while maintaining proper stitch tension.
