Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Louis Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork design. The pattern uses the Louis Moniker Chart as the focal intarsia motif, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to develop their colorwork skills beyond basic stranded techniques. The sweater is designed with multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements.
What Is Being Made
A pullover-style children's sweater constructed in pieces (back, front, and sleeves) that are subsequently joined together. The garment features a classic crew neckline and is worked primarily in stockinette stitch with ribbed edgings. The intarsia chart is incorporated into the front piece, creating a personalized or decorative element using the Louis Moniker design.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia colorwork: The Louis Moniker Chart is worked using the intarsia method, which involves using separate yarn lengths or bobbins for different colored sections rather than carrying yarn across the back. This technique creates a flat, single-layer fabric ideal for pictorial or personalized designs.
- Ribbed edging: The pattern begins with 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2 ribbing) at the cuffs and hem, providing stretch and structure to the garment edges.
- Armhole shaping: Decreases are worked at the beginning of rows to shape the armholes, creating a fitted sleeve cap.
- Stitch decreases: Purl 2 together (p2tog) decreases are used strategically throughout the pattern for shaping.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, flat fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the right side.
- 2x2 rib: Alternating knit and purl stitches in groups of two, used for cuffs, hem, and neckline ribbing to provide elasticity and a finished appearance.
- Purl 2 together (p2tog): A left-leaning decrease used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas of the sweater.
- Knit stitches: Standard knit stitches form the foundation of the stockinette sections and ribbed areas.
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn that creates a refined, drapey fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires 2¾mm needles for the main stockinette sections and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed edgings, with the smaller needle size creating the tighter tension needed for elastic ribbing.
Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn. The pattern includes multiple size options, with row counts and stitch counts varying accordingly—for example, back pieces range from 70 to 102 cast-on stitches depending on the chosen size, and body lengths range from 40 to 82 rows before armhole shaping begins.
Pattern Structure
The sweater is worked in separate pieces following a traditional construction method. The back piece is completed first, followed by the front piece which incorporates the intarsia Louis Moniker Chart. Armhole shaping is consistent between front and back pieces, with decreases worked over multiple rows to create a gradual, professional-looking curve. The pattern provides detailed row-by-row instructions with size variations noted in brackets throughout, allowing knitters to track their progress and ensure proper fit for their chosen size.
