Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Keanu Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater featuring an intarsia design incorporating a personalized name chart (Keanu moniker). The garment is constructed as a classic pullover sweater with separate front and back pieces, designed to be worked from the bottom up using flat knitting techniques on straight needles.
Craft and Primary Technique
Primary Craft: Knitting
This pattern uses intarsia knitting, a specialized colorwork technique where different colored yarns are used to create a pictorial or text-based design. Rather than carrying unused yarn across the back of the work (as in stranded colorwork), intarsia uses separate bobbins or lengths of yarn for each color block. This method is ideal for large design areas and personalized name charts, as it keeps the back of the fabric neat and prevents excessive bulk from carried yarns. The intarsia chart allows the knitter to follow a visual grid pattern to position the Keanu moniker precisely within the sweater's front panel.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The primary stitch used throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance on the right side
- 2x2 Ribbing (2x2 rib): A knit-purl pattern (K2, P2 repeat) used for the cuffs and waistband, providing elasticity and a fitted finish at the garment edges
- Purl Stitches (p): Used in combination with knit stitches for ribbed sections and shaping
- Decreases (p2tog): Purl two together decreases are used for armhole shaping and waist shaping to create the garment's contoured fit
Construction Details and Shaping
The sweater features multiple size options with graduated measurements throughout. The back piece begins with a cast-on of 70 stitches and includes ribbed edging worked in 2x2 rib pattern. After the ribbed section, the garment transitions to stockinette stitch and continues for a specified number of rows depending on size. Armhole shaping is achieved through decreasing one stitch at each end of every row over multiple rows, reducing the stitch count progressively. The front piece follows a similar construction method but incorporates the intarsia chart for the personalized name design. Stitch holders are used to hold stitches temporarily during neck shaping and finishing.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn Weight: 4-ply yarn is specified for this project. This lightweight yarn weight creates a refined, drapey fabric suitable for children's garments, offering good stitch definition that makes the intarsia design clearly visible.
Needles: The pattern calls for two needle sizes:
- 2¾mm needles: Used for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections, creating a tighter gauge that provides elasticity
- 3¼mm needles: Used for the main stockinette stitch body, creating a slightly looser gauge for the sweater's primary fabric
The pattern emphasizes that yarn amounts are based on average requirements when the specified tension and yarn weight are used, making it essential to match the recommended materials and gauge for accurate fit.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches used are relatively straightforward, the intarsia colorwork technique requires careful attention to the chart and proper management of multiple yarn colors. Knitters should be comfortable reading charts, managing bobbins or yarn lengths, and executing basic shaping techniques including decreases and armhole construction.
