Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Dylan Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring an intarsia moniker chart design. The garment is constructed as a classic pullover with a fitted body and set-in sleeves, offering a personalized element through the intarsia charting technique that allows for custom name or initial incorporation into the knitted fabric.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project designed for intermediate-level knitters. The pattern employs the intarsia knitting technique, which involves knitting with multiple colors in a structured, pictorial design. Unlike stranded colorwork, intarsia uses separate yarn lengths for each color block, creating a smooth, single-layer fabric ideal for personalized motifs such as names or initials. This technique produces a professional finish without the bulk of traditional Fair Isle or jacquard methods.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
- Stockinette stitch (st-st) – The primary stitch throughout the main body of the sweater, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
- 2x2 Ribbing (k2, p2) – Used for the cuff, waistband, and neckline finishing to provide elasticity and a neat, fitted edge
- Purl stitches (p) – Used in combination with knit stitches for ribbed sections
- Knit stitches (k) – The foundational stitch throughout
- Decreases (dec 1 st) – Used for shaping armholes and other fitted areas
- Purl two together (p2tog) – A decrease technique used for shaping
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yarn that produces a refined, detailed fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies the use of 2¾mm needles for the main body knitting in stockinette stitch and 3¼mm needles for the ribbed sections, following the standard practice of using slightly larger needles for ribbing to maintain consistent elasticity and drape. The yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn weight and needle size.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern is written in multiple sizes for children, with stitch counts and row counts provided in brackets to accommodate different age ranges and measurements. This modular sizing approach allows the sweater to be knitted to fit various children's dimensions. The pattern includes detailed shaping instructions for armholes, with specific decreases worked at regular intervals to create a properly fitted garment.
Construction Method
The sweater is constructed using the traditional flat knitting method, with separate pieces for the back, front, and sleeves that are subsequently seamed together. The back piece is worked first, establishing the foundational stockinette stitch fabric and armhole shaping. The front follows the same shaping principles but incorporates the intarsia moniker chart, allowing the personalized design to be integrated seamlessly into the knitted fabric. The ribbed edgings are worked perpendicular to the main body, providing a professional finish and functional elasticity at key areas.
