Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia Dorian Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
Project Overview
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's sweater featuring intarsia colorwork. The design incorporates the "Dorian Moniker" chart, allowing crafters to personalize the garment with custom lettering or monogram details using the intarsia technique. The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with basic shaping and are ready to tackle colorwork methods.
What Is Being Made
A fitted children's pullover sweater with long sleeves, worked primarily in stockinette stitch. The garment features a classic crew neckline with ribbed edging and includes armhole shaping for a tailored fit. Multiple size options are provided within the pattern to accommodate various children's measurements.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Intarsia colorwork: The primary decorative technique, where the Dorian Moniker chart is worked into the front of the sweater using separate yarn lengths for each color block, creating a custom monogram or lettering effect
- Stockinette stitch (st-st): The main fabric structure used throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
- Two-by-two ribbing (2x2 rib): Used for the neckline and cuff edgings to provide elasticity and a finished appearance
- Armhole shaping: Decreases worked at the beginning of rows to create fitted armholes
- Thumb method casting on: The specified cast-on technique for establishing the initial stitches
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
- K: Knit stitch
- P: Purl stitch
- St-st: Stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows)
- P2tog: Purl two stitches together (a decrease method)
- 2x2 rib: A repeating pattern of two knit stitches followed by two purl stitches
Materials and Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides a lightweight, durable fabric suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies two needle sizes: 2¾mm needles for the ribbed sections and 3¼mm needles for the main stockinette stitch body. The yarn amounts provided in the pattern are based on achieving the specified tension (gauge) with the recommended yarn and needles.
Pattern Structure and Sizing
The pattern includes multiple size options, indicated by bracketed measurements throughout the instructions (for example, [25:29:29:33] represents different stitch counts for each size). The back and front pieces are worked separately with detailed shaping instructions, including armhole decreases and finishing techniques. The pattern provides both metric and imperial measurements for row lengths and finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with basic increases and decreases, can read and follow a chart, and have experience managing multiple yarn colors or bobbins for intarsia work. The combination of shaping, ribbing, and colorwork makes this suitable for knitters progressing beyond beginner projects.
