Product Description
The pattern comes with written knitting instructions for 4ply sweater 0 - 5 years and the Name chart pictured. Moniker name sweaters make great gifts for newborns. You can knit the back and sleeves before baby is born and finish the front once the name has been announced. The sweater can then be kept as a keepsake, hung in the child’s room, on the door or used to dress a toy. Not the name you wanted? No problem, leave a request on my site!
This chart can be used with any INSTARSIA pattern. All instarsia charts now have a colour count on them telling you how many squares of each colour make up the chart. This is helpful info if you want to uses the chart to make pixel crochet blankets, bead art or even quilting.
Intarsia - Alfie Moniker Chart Children's Sweater
What is Being Made
This is a children's sweater pattern featuring intarsia colorwork design. The garment is constructed with a classic pullover silhouette, including a shaped back and front with armhole shaping and ribbed edging. The pattern provides multiple size options to accommodate different children's measurements, making it suitable for various ages and fit requirements.
Techniques Used
Intarsia Colorwork: The primary technique featured in this pattern is intarsia, a method of incorporating multiple colors into knitted fabric by using separate yarn lengths for each color section. This technique creates distinct blocks of color with clean color changes, as indicated by the moniker chart provided with the pattern. Intarsia differs from stranded colorwork in that it avoids carrying yarn across the back of the work, resulting in a flatter, less bulky fabric ideal for children's garments.
Shaping: The sweater incorporates strategic shaping throughout construction. Armhole shaping is achieved through decreasing stitches at each end of rows over multiple rows, creating a fitted sleeve opening. The pattern uses decreasing techniques to shape the garment to proper proportions across the different size options provided.
Ribbed Edging: The pattern includes 2x2 ribbed sections (knit 2, purl 2 repeat) which provide elasticity and structure to the garment edges, particularly at the neckline and cuffs.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st-st): The main fabric stitch used throughout the body of the sweater, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic knitted appearance
- 2x2 Ribbing: A repeating pattern of knit 2 stitches followed by purl 2 stitches, used for edging and cuff sections to create stretch and definition
- Purl 2 Together (p2tog): A decrease stitch used to shape the garment, particularly during armhole shaping and waist shaping sections
- Knit Stitches: Standard knit stitches form the foundation of the stockinette stitch fabric
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Weight: This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn, which is a lightweight yarn suitable for children's garments. 4-ply yarn creates a finely knitted fabric with good stitch definition, making it ideal for displaying intarsia colorwork details clearly.
Needles: The pattern uses two needle sizes during construction. Size 2¾mm needles are used for the main body and stockinette stitch sections, while size 3¼mm needles are used for ribbed edging, allowing the ribbing to sit properly without being too tight.
Gauge and Tension: Yarn amounts are calculated based on achieving the specified tension with the recommended yarn and needle sizes. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements across all size options.
Pattern Structure
The pattern provides multiple size options with stitch counts and row counts varying accordingly. Cast-on uses the thumb method with 70 stitches for the back piece, with subsequent increases or adjustments noted in brackets for different sizes. The front and back pieces are worked separately with detailed shaping instructions, including armhole decreases worked over multiple rows and specific stitch counts maintained throughout the garment construction.
