What Is Being Made

The Imogene Washcloth/Dishcloth is a practical, square textile project designed for everyday kitchen and bathroom use. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished piece measuring 11 inches by 11 inches, making it an ideal size for washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, or general household cleaning tasks. The pattern is created by independent designer Cluck Cluck Boots and is suitable for knitters with intermediate-level skills.

Yarn and Materials

This project uses 106 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn, requiring only a single ball of yarn to complete. The pattern example was created using Knit Picks Dishie in the Clarity colorway, which provides 190 yards per 100-gram ball. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for dishcloths and washcloths because it is absorbent, durable, and easy to care for in frequent washing. You will need Size 6.0 (4.0mm) needles—either 24-inch circular needles or straight needles—along with a needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Imogene pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The core skills required include:

  • Casting on to create the initial 52 stitches on your needles
  • Knit stitch (K) for creating smooth, textured fabric
  • Purl stitch (P) for creating reverse texture and visual interest
  • Binding off to secure stitches and finish the edges

The pattern begins with 6 rows of garter stitch (knitting every row), which creates a stable, non-curling edge. The main body features a repeating stitch pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches in a structured sequence across 5 rows, creating a textured, visually interesting surface. This combination of knit and purl stitches produces a reversible fabric with dimensional texture on both sides, making the dishcloth functional and attractive from either direction. The 4-stitch garter stitch borders on each side frame the central pattern and help maintain even edges throughout the project.

Pattern Structure

The pattern uses a repeating 5-row sequence that creates geometric texture through strategic placement of knit and purl stitches. Each row maintains consistent edge stitches while varying the central pattern, allowing the texture to develop gradually as rows accumulate. This methodical approach makes the pattern easy to follow and suitable for intermediate knitters seeking to build confidence with stitch combinations.
