Product Description
A well-known fact about me is my ongoing and eternal love of pie. I have never met a (dessert) pie that I didn’t like, and am unable to pick just one favorite. But I also love the mathematical constant pi—that is, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, or 3.1415926535 (and so on). Math team cheers need it, calculations of distance, momentum, and volume need it in every branch of math, science, and engineering, and it’s fun to yell at sporting events when there’s 3:14 left on the timeclock.
This hat uses the principle of pi in two ways. First, it is worked top-down with increases worked until the diameter of the knitting is 1/3.14 of the desired circumference. Second, the welting pattern of alternating knit and purled bands follows the digits of pi!
The sample shown uses approximately 80 yards of bulky weight yarn, spun and N-plied from past PhatFiber Sampler Box fluff samples. This is a great project for such "monster yarn", or any other yarn.
I Love Pi Knit Hat by Katherine Vaughan
Project Overview
The I Love Pi hat is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Katherine Vaughan for independent crafters. This intermediate-level project celebrates both culinary and mathematical passions through a playful, wearable design. The hat is suitable for adult head sizes ranging from 20 inches (51 centimeters) to 24 inches (61 centimeters), making it a versatile pattern for gift-giving or personal use.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a fitted knit hat with a finished circumference of 19.75 inches (50 centimeters) and a relaxed length of 7 inches (18 centimeters). The hat is designed as a one-size-fits-most garment that accommodates a range of adult head sizes through the natural stretch and fit of knitted fabric. The design combines mathematical and culinary themes, making it an ideal project for those who appreciate both pie and the mathematical constant pi.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting construction methods suitable for crafters with basic to moderate experience. The hat is worked using standard circular or double-pointed needle techniques, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method for working in the round. The pattern utilizes increases and decreases to shape the crown and create a properly fitted hat that sits comfortably on a range of head sizes.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the hat, worked in the round to create a smooth, classic knit fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns
- Knit (K): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P): Reverse knit stitch used as needed in the pattern construction
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used to shape the hat crown and reduce stitch count
- Knit Front and Back (Kf&b): An increase technique that creates new stitches by working into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
- Purl Front and Back (Pf&b): A purl-based increase worked similarly to Kf&b for stitch expansion where needed
Materials and Gauge
The I Love Pi hat requires approximately 80 yards of bulky or superweight weight handspun yarn with a weight of 8 to 9 wraps per inch (wpi). This yardage is sufficient for the adult one-size hat. Knitters will need US 11 (8 millimeter) needles in either double-pointed or circular configuration, depending on their preferred method for working in the round. Additional materials include 6 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 11 stitches and 16 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in Stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished hat meets the intended dimensions and fits comfortably across the specified range of adult head sizes. Knitters should swatch before beginning to verify their personal gauge matches the pattern specifications.
Yarn Weight and Fiber Considerations
The bulky and superweight yarn weight specified for this project creates a quick-knitting hat that works up rapidly due to the larger stitch size. The use of handspun yarn adds artisanal character to the finished piece and allows for unique color and texture variations depending on the specific handspun yarn selected. The chunky yarn weight produces a substantial, warm hat suitable for cold weather wear.
