Huxley Slipover in Rowan Alpaca Soft DK – Pattern Summary
The Huxley Slipover is a sophisticated knitted slipover designed by Martin Storey and published under the Rowan brand as pattern reference RM007-00020-DEP. Available as a downloadable PDF, this intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a sleeveless pullover with elegant textural interest, suitable for a range of chest sizes from 81–86 cm up to 132–137 cm, covering six size options in total.
What Is Being Made
The Huxley Slipover is a classic sleeveless garment — sometimes called a vest or tank top — worked in DK weight yarn. It features a shaped front and back with armhole shaping, a front V-neck or shaped neckline, and shoulder shaping, making it a refined, wearable layering piece. The finished knitted chest measurement ranges from approximately 101 cm to 150 cm depending on the chosen size, offering a comfortable, relaxed fit across the bust.
Construction and Structure
The slipover is constructed in separate flat pieces — a back and a front — which are then seamed together. The back and front are worked to the same length before armhole shaping begins, ensuring a well-balanced silhouette. The front neckline is divided at a specific point, with each side completed separately to create a neat, symmetrical neckline shaping. Shoulder shaping is also incorporated to give a professional, tailored finish.
- Back: Begins with a ribbed welt, then transitions to the main stitch pattern for the body, with armhole shaping worked at both sides.
- Front: Worked identically to the back up to a marked point, then continues with the same stitch pattern before armhole shaping and front neckline shaping are introduced. Each shoulder side is finished independently.
- Neckline shaping: Decreases are worked at regular intervals — every 2nd and every 4th row — to create a smooth, gradual neckline curve on the front.
- Armhole shaping: Stitches are cast off at the beginning of rows, followed by paired decreases worked over subsequent rows to form neat, fitted armholes.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Huxley Slipover draws on a combination of classic knitting stitches and techniques to create its textured appearance:
- 2x2 Rib (Ribbing): The welt and lower border sections are worked in a 2 knit, 2 purl rib pattern, providing elasticity and a neat, structured edge. Rows alternate between knit-over-knit and purl-over-purl to maintain the rib columns.
- Stocking Stitch (Stockinette): Sections of the garment are worked in smooth stocking stitch — knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows — forming the foundation fabric.
- Stitch Pattern (Chart-Based): The main body of the slipover features a 28-stitch repeat pattern worked from a stitch chart provided in the PDF. This pattern repeat is worked 4 to 6 times across each row depending on the size, and spans a 58-row repeat that is worked continuously throughout the body. This chart-based element adds textural or decorative detail that elevates the design beyond a plain knit.
- Increasing and Decreasing: Standard knitting increases and decreases are used throughout for armhole shaping, neckline shaping, and transitional stitch count adjustments between the rib and body sections.
- Casting on and binding off: Stitches are cast on at the start and bound off at armhole openings to create clean, structured edges.
- Working on hold / stitch holders: When dividing for the front neckline, stitches are placed on a spare needle or stitch holder while each side is completed separately — a standard technique for symmetrical neckline construction.
Needle Sizes
The pattern calls for two sizes of straight knitting needles and one circular needle:
- 3.25 mm (UK 10) straight needles
