Hot Cocoa Cardi by Bunnymuff
What Is Being Made
The Hot Cocoa Cardi is a knitted cardigan pattern designed by Mona Zillah of bunnymuff. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern creates a wearable cardigan suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a cozy, structured garment.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is designed for knitting as the primary craft. The Hot Cocoa Cardi uses traditional hand knitting methods to construct a fitted cardigan with careful shaping and finishing details.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure:
- Cast On (CO) - The pattern uses long-tail cast on as the default method for beginning stitches, unless otherwise specified in individual sections
- Bind Off (BO) - The recommended bind-off method is the slipped stitch bind-off, which creates a neat, secure edge. This technique involves knitting two stitches, then replacing both stitches from the right needle back to the left needle, inserting the right needle through the back loops of both stitches, knitting these together, and repeating until all stitches are bound off
- German Short Row or German Turn and Work (GTW) - This advanced shaping technique is featured in the pattern and creates nearly invisible short rows, allowing for precise garment shaping without visible gaps or holes
Yarn and Materials
The Hot Cocoa Cardi is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn (also known as 8 ply). The pattern specifies Plötulopi – Unspun Icelandic by Ístex as the recommended yarn, which is composed of 100% Icelandic wool and provides approximately 328 yards (300 meters) per 100-gram skein.
The cardigan uses a three-color combination:
- MC (Main Color) - Marsh Heather, required in quantities of 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, or 5 skeins depending on size
- CC1 (Contrast Color 1) - Black Sheep Heather, one plate
- CC2 (Contrast Color 2) - Oatmeal Heather, one plate
- CC3 (Contrast Color 3) - Light Beige, one plate
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires the following needle sizes and types:
- 3.75mm (US No. 5) circular needles in 40-inch/101-centimeter length for working the main body sections
- Double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working sleeves in the round
Difficulty Level
The Hot Cocoa Cardi is rated as an intermediate knitting project. This difficulty level reflects the use of advanced techniques such as German short rows and the multi-color construction, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical abilities.
