Hope Hat by Michelle Ferguson

What is Being Made

The Hope Hat is a beginner-friendly crochet hat designed by Michelle Ferguson and available in four sizing options: Toddler (18-20" head circumference), Child (20-21"), Teen/Small Adult (21-22"), and Adult (22-23"). This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished hat suitable for a range of ages and head sizes, with optional pom-pom embellishment.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Hope Hat is worked from the bottom up, beginning with the brim and progressing upward to the crown. This bottom-up construction approach allows crocheters to easily adjust the fit and length as they work. The pattern incorporates several foundational crochet techniques appropriate for beginners, including basic chain stitches to establish the foundation and working in the back loop only (blo) for specific sections to create texture and structure.

Stitches Used

The Hope Hat pattern employs a combination of essential crochet stitches:

  • Single crochet (sc) – used for the brim, providing a dense, structured base
  • Herringbone double crochet (herr-dc) – creates visual texture and interest in the body of the hat
  • Herringbone double crochet 2 together (herr-dc2tog) – used for shaping and decreasing
  • Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – another decrease stitch for shaping the crown
  • Chain stitch (ch) – forms the foundation and turning chains throughout

Yarn and Materials

The Hope Hat requires worsted weight (#4) yarn in quantities ranging from 128 yards for the Toddler size to 200 yards for the Adult size. The pattern sample is shown in WeCrochet Brava Worsted in Sky 28451. Crocheters will need an I (5.5mm) crochet hook, along with basic finishing tools including scissors, a measuring tape, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. An optional pom-pom can be added to the crown for decorative finishing.

Gauge and Sizing

Proper gauge is important for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The brim should measure 8 single crochet stitches by 7 rows over 2 inches, while the body of the hat should contain 13 stitches within a 4-inch width. These gauge measurements ensure that the hat will fit the intended head circumference for each size category.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner pattern, the Hope Hat is accessible to new crocheters while introducing fundamental techniques. The straightforward bottom-up construction and use of basic stitches make this an ideal project for building foundational crochet skills.
