Product Description
Hollicars is a beaded scarf that Jane originally designed for her good friend Rachel Atkinson, using her lovely yarn brand Daughter of a Shepherd. The pattern first appeared in Rachel's fabulous book Volume 1: Beginnings.
Jane loves adding beads to crochet and felt that this lace design showed the subtlety of the twinkling beads beautifully. Beading is much easier than you would think and you can find a free YouTube video on the Janie Crow channel that shows how to thread the beads and work the beading techniques needed for this design.

What is Being Made
The Hollicars Scarf is a beaded crochet scarf designed by Jane Crowfoot and originally created for Rachel Atkinson using yarn from her brand Daughter of a Shepherd. This intermediate-level project combines lace crochet with decorative beading to create an elegant accessory. The finished scarf measures approximately 25cm (9⅞ inches) wide by 154cm (60¾ inches) long, making it a substantial and versatile piece suitable for various styling occasions.
Crochet Techniques Used
This design showcases lace crochet construction, which creates an open, delicate fabric that allows the beads to catch light beautifully. The pattern incorporates beading techniques throughout, which Jane Crowfoot emphasizes is more accessible than many crocheters initially believe. The beading method involves threading beads onto the yarn before working them into the fabric, with beads positioned to sit close to the top of the stitches for maximum visual impact and sparkle.
The pattern includes detailed guidance on yarn management, specifically recommending that crocheters sew in yarn ends as they work rather than waiting until the end. This approach reduces finishing errors and prevents the loss of stitches due to tension issues during the final stages of the project.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch featured in this pattern is the Beaded Half Treble (bhtr), a special abbreviation unique to this design. This stitch integrates the beads directly into the crochet fabric, with instructions for working right-side-facing beaded half trebles that position beads prominently within the lace structure.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Hollicars Scarf is worked in 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that creates a delicate, refined fabric ideal for a lace design. The pattern was originally worked with yarn from Daughter of a Shepherd, Rachel Atkinson's yarn brand. In addition to yarn, crocheters will need beads suitable for threading onto 4-ply yarn and a crochet hook appropriate for this yarn weight. Sewing yarn is also recommended for neatly finishing yarn ends as you progress through the project.
Additional Resources
Jane Crowfoot provides supplementary instruction through video content, with a free YouTube tutorial available via her channel demonstrating the beading techniques and methods for threading beads into the yarn. This visual reference complements the written pattern and is particularly helpful for crocheters new to beading applications.
The pattern was first published in Volume 1: Beginnings, Rachel Atkinson's book, establishing this design as an established, published crochet pattern with proven construction methods.
