Hibiscus Tote Bag by Pattern Paradise
Project Overview
The Hibiscus Tote Bag is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Pattern Paradise. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a practical and stylish tote bag measuring 13 inches wide by 14 inches tall, not including the straps. The finished bag is suitable for everyday use and makes an excellent handmade gift for crochet enthusiasts.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a structured tote bag with functional handles. The bag features a finished size of 13" wide x 14" tall, providing ample space for carrying everyday items. The design incorporates metal rings as hardware elements, which add durability and a polished finish to the completed project.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Worsted weight cotton yarn in two colors, approximately 350 yards of each color (total of about 700 yards)
- Hook: Clover Amour H/5.00 mm crochet hook
- Hardware: Four ¾" or 1" metal rings
- Notions: Yarn or tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Hibiscus Tote Bag utilizes fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern employs the following stitches and methods:
- Single Crochet (sc): The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, creating a dense and sturdy fabric ideal for a functional tote bag
- Chain Stitch (ch): Used for foundation chains and creating structure within the pattern
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Employed to join rounds and create seamless transitions in the construction
- Stitch Increases: Multiple stitches worked into a single stitch to shape the bag and create shaping
Pattern Gauge and Construction
The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 single crochets by 15 rows equaling 4 inches when worked with the recommended hook and yarn. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the finished bag to reach the intended dimensions. The pattern uses clear abbreviations and instructions, including notation where a number preceding a stitch indicates multiple stitches in one location, and where a stitch preceding a number indicates that stitch worked across multiple stitches.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
This project is constructed using aran-weight worsted cotton yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and durability for a bag that will receive regular use. The intermediate difficulty level makes this pattern suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle projects with shaping, color changes, and hardware integration. The cotton yarn choice offers breathability and a natural aesthetic while maintaining the structure needed for a functional tote.
