Looks a really good pattern. Looking forward to knitting it.
Even though cute little these hearts are 3-dimensional they are knitted back and forth. They are constructed of short rows and knitted all in garter stitch. They come in three different sizes.
They may also be a lovely way to practice your knitting skills – especially magic CO and grafting in garter stitch. As to the name, “Herzchen” is the German word for little heart.
This is NOT a beginner pattern. In order to knit one of these hearts, you need the following knitting skills:
- Magic CO
- Short rows with wrap and turn
- Grafting in garter stitch
- Basic increases and decreases (kfb and ssk)
The 10 page patter PDF contains:
- an explanation of the general construction
- six explanatory photos
- row-by-row patterns for these hearts in 3 sizes
- charts for hearts in 2 sizes
Herzchen features three-dimensional decorative hearts perfect for Valentine's Day celebrations and home décor. The name "Herzchen" is German for "little heart," and the pattern provides instructions for creating hearts in three different sizes. These charming ornaments can be used to embellish gifts, decorate living spaces, or create a collection of festive decorations. The design's addictive nature makes it an engaging project that encourages crafters to create multiple pieces.
Despite their three-dimensional appearance, Herzchen hearts are knitted back and forth in a flat construction using short rows. This technique creates the dimensional shaping without requiring circular needles or complex 3D knitting methods. The pattern includes several valuable knitting techniques that make this project particularly useful for skill development and practice.
Key techniques featured in this pattern include:
Garter stitch forms the foundation of this entire project. Garter stitch—created by knitting every row—produces a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. This simple yet effective stitch is ideal for beginners to intermediate knitters and creates a fabric with excellent drape and flexibility, perfect for three-dimensional decorative pieces.
Herzchen is designed to work with 4-ply yarn weight, making it an excellent project for using up yarn leftovers and scraps. The pattern accommodates flexibility in yarn selection, as the designer used two different yarn types during development: self-striping fingering weight yarn and DK weight yarn. This versatility allows crafters to create hearts in various color combinations and effects. Knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required to achieve proper fabric gauge and drape.
The downloadable PDF pattern document includes comprehensive guidance for successful completion. The pattern provides an explanation of the general construction method, six explanatory photographs to illustrate techniques and shaping, row-by-row patterns for all three heart sizes, and charts for two of the sizes. This combination of written instructions and visual references supports crafters at the intermediate skill level in understanding the short-row shaping and finishing techniques.
Rated as intermediate difficulty, Herzchen suits knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical abilities. The project's manageable size and straightforward garter stitch base make it accessible, while the magic cast-on, short-row shaping, and grafting techniques provide meaningful skill-building opportunities without overwhelming complexity.
