Product Description

This cute little tank top will suit any baby or toddler, keeping them stylish and super cosy. It’s a very simple knit with just a few rows of colourwork for some interest. You can of course just miss out the colourwork if you prefer. There are 4 rows in the chart where you are using 3 colours at a time. Be careful not to get in too much of a tangle with the yarns! It can be a very slow process untangling them!

The left shoulder has two buttons to make the neck opening wide enough to get over the head easily. You can of course, opt for poppers instead of buttons, in which case just ignore the buttonholes but do the rest the same.

You will need:

Mrs Moon Pudding (new name for Swaddle) in the following quantities: 3 (3, 4, 4)x Main Colour (MC) (shown in Earl Grey) 1 x Contrast Colour 1 (CC1) (shown in Gooseberry Fool) 1 x Contrast Colour 2 (CC2) (shown in Peppermint Cream)

3mm and 3.25mm needles (straight or circular, but you will need a 3mm circular for the neckband – 60cm)

What is Being Made

The Henry Tank Top is a cute and cosy sleeveless garment designed for babies and toddlers. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a simple yet stylish tank top featuring optional colourwork details. The design includes a practical left shoulder closure with two buttons, allowing for an easy neck opening to slip the garment over a child's head. The pattern offers flexibility, as knitters can choose to omit the colourwork entirely if preferred, or substitute poppers for the traditional button fastening.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Henry Tank Top employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The primary construction method is straightforward stockinette stitch knitting, making it accessible while still creating a polished finished garment. The pattern incorporates colourwork as an optional decorative element, featuring a knitted chart with sections requiring three colours worked simultaneously across four rows. This multi-colour technique requires careful yarn management to prevent tangling during the knitting process. The pattern also includes button band construction along the left shoulder, with integrated buttonholes for securing the closure. Knitters have the option to work buttonholes or simply omit them if using poppers instead.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While the pattern description emphasizes simplicity, the Henry Tank Top utilizes stockinette stitch as its foundation, creating a smooth, classic fabric suitable for babies and toddlers. The optional colourwork sections are worked using intarsia or stranded knitting techniques, where multiple yarn colours are carried and worked into the fabric according to the provided chart. The button band likely incorporates garter stitch or ribbing for structure and elasticity around the neck and shoulder opening.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Henry Tank Top pattern calls for Mrs Moon Pudding yarn (previously marketed as Swaddle) in sport weight. The yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 3 to 4 balls of the main colour (shown in Earl Grey), with 1 ball each of two contrast colours: Gooseberry Fool and Peppermint Cream. The pattern requires 3mm and 3.25mm knitting needles, available in straight or circular formats. A 3mm circular needle is specifically needed for certain sections of the garment construction, as indicated in the materials list.

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Classified as an intermediate knitting project, the Henry Tank Top is designed for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners. The intermediate rating reflects the inclusion of optional colourwork techniques and the need to manage multiple yarn colours simultaneously, which requires attention to tension and yarn management. However, the straightforward construction and simple stitch patterns make it an excellent project for intermediate knitters looking to build confidence with colourwork techniques in a small, manageable garment.
