What Is Being Made

These are crochet slipper-socks designed to resemble hedgehogs, combining the comfort of socks with the cozy appeal of animal-themed slippers. The pattern is available in five adult sizes ranging from X-small (fitting a 7-inch foot circumference) to X-large, making them suitable for various foot dimensions. The finished slipper-socks feature a hedgehog design element that adds playful character to a practical footwear project.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This beginner-friendly crochet project uses fundamental techniques accessible to those new to the craft. The construction begins with foundation single crochet (fsc), a foundational technique that creates the base chain and first row simultaneously. The pattern incorporates working in the front loop only (flo), a method that creates textural variation and definition in the finished fabric. The slipper-socks are worked in rounds, building the three-dimensional foot structure from the ground up.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches suitable for beginners:

  • Chain stitches (ch) – the fundamental building block of crochet
  • Foundation single crochet (fsc) – creates the initial base with integrated chain and first row
  • Single crochet worked in front loop only (flo) – adds textural interest and shaping

The pattern is worked primarily in rounds, creating seamless cylindrical sections for the foot and leg portions of the slipper-socks.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Whims Merino by Furls Crochet, a DK weight yarn blended from 50% Merino wool and 50% nylon. This blend provides warmth, breathability, and durability. The project requires 1 ball of Light Grey (A) and 2 balls of Charcoal (B), totaling approximately 360 yards of yarn from a 100-gram skein.

Hook: A 4mm crochet hook is used throughout the pattern, appropriate for DK weight yarn and the beginner skill level.

Notions: A yarn needle (tapestry needle) for weaving in ends and finishing, plus 2 stitch markers in different colors to track pattern repeats and size increases.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches by 8 rounds measuring 2 inches (5 cm) when worked in the foot pattern, with toes worked at a slightly tighter gauge of 9 stitches to 2 inches. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished slipper-socks will fit properly across all available sizes.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, these hedgehog slipper-socks are ideal for crocheters new to the craft or those seeking a straightforward, satisfying make. The combination of basic stitches and simple construction techniques makes this an excellent introduction to working in rounds and creating fitted garments.
