Product Description

This bridal garter made with heart lace has quickly become a family wedding tradition.

This example is made of white 20 gauge crochet cotton and 1.75 mm needles. However, the pattern has and can be knitted with any weight of crochet cotton and appropriate sized needles. One particular fine example was made with 40 gauge cotton and 1.25 mm needles. Another was made in red and black and caused much hilarity.

This may become your heirloom and tradition, but any bride will be delighted to receive this heart lace garter as a gift made with your love and best wishes for the future.

This heart lace has taken years to refine, the heart pattern as a whole or in part is copyrighted to Thread and Yarns of Pleasure and may not be used in any other pattern.

Heart Lace Wedding Garter by Threads and Yarns of Pleasure

What Is Being Made

This is a heirloom-quality knitted wedding garter designed to become a cherished tradition for a bride to wear on her wedding day. The garter features delicate heart motifs worked in fine lace and is sized at approximately 23 inches (59cm) in length by 2½ inches (6cm) in width, though the circumference can be customized by adding or removing heart pattern repeats to suit different leg measurements.

Craft and Techniques

This is an advanced-level knitting project intended for experienced knitters. The design employs short-row shaping to create the fullness and dimensional quality characteristic of fine lace garments. Short rows are indicated in the written pattern by the word "Turn" and in the accompanying chart by a red line. This technique involves working only a portion of the stitches across the row, then turning to work back, which creates subtle increases in fabric volume without traditional yarn-over increases.

The lace pattern is worked flat and then dressed—a finishing technique where the knitted fabric is blocked and shaped using spray starch and pinned to a bed pillow (optional) to set the lace structure permanently. This dressing process ensures the delicate heart motifs hold their shape and creates the crisp, defined appearance expected in heirloom lace.

Stitches Used

The garter is primarily worked in stocking stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) as the base fabric. The heart lace motifs are created through the strategic placement of yarn-overs and decreases that form the decorative pattern, with specific stitch sequences detailed in both written instructions and charted format. The pattern includes slip stitches, worked by slipping stitches from the left needle to the right needle without working them, particularly at the turning points created by short-row shaping.

Materials and Tools

  • Needles: Size 1.75mm knitting needles
  • Yarn: 20 grams of white crochet cotton thread—a fine, delicate yarn weight suitable for creating intricate lace
  • Notions: 36 inches (90cm) of blue ribbon, 24 inches (61cm) of 5mm sewing elastic, darning needle, sewing needle, and sewing cotton for finishing and attaching the elastic
  • Finishing supplies: Spray starch and pins for blocking and dressing the lace; a bed pillow is optional for use as a blocking surface

Skill Level and Pattern Format

This pattern is rated for experienced knitters due to the advanced techniques involved, including short-row shaping and lace pattern work. The design is provided as a downloadable PDF, which includes both written instructions and charted patterns to guide knitters through the heart motif repeats and short-row turning points. The tension specification is 44 stitches and 45 rows over 10cm x 10cm (4 inches x 4 inches) when worked in stocking stitch on the specified needles.
