Hanagasumi (Kanji -花霞)** Hazy curtain of flowers, cherry blossoms appearing from afar like white mist.
The idea of Hazy Pullover was to make an everyday and almost all seasons pullover to be worn by itself or as a layer.
The garment pieces are knitted flat bottom-up and then seamed together. Sleeves are knitted flat and then seamed to the body. Neckband is picked up and worked circularly after body assembly.

Hazy Knitted Sweater by Kuroki Knitting
What is Being Made
Hazy is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Alejandra Graterol of Kuroki Knitting. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a classic pullover sweater with long sleeves, ribbed waistband, cuffs, and neckband. The design features a structured construction worked flat in pieces, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills looking to expand their garment-making repertoire.
Primary Knitting Techniques
This sweater pattern incorporates several essential knitting techniques that define its intermediate difficulty level:
- Purlwise Long Tail Cast On: A foundational cast-on method used to establish stitches with flexibility and durability, particularly suited for garment edges
- Sloped Bind Off: A finishing technique that creates a neat, angled edge for a professional appearance
- Right Leaning Double Decrease: A shaping technique used to decrease two stitches while maintaining directional stitch orientation
- Left Leaning Double Decrease: The counterpart decrease method that creates balanced shaping when used symmetrically on garment panels
- Flat Knitting Construction: The sweater is worked flat in separate pieces (back, front, and two sleeves) rather than in the round, allowing for easier pattern management and seaming
Stitch Patterns Used
The Hazy sweater employs two distinct stitch patterns to create texture and structure:
- Stockinette Stitch (Jersey): The main fabric of the sweater body and sleeves, worked flat using alternating knit and purl rows. This creates the classic smooth, V-textured surface characteristic of traditional sweaters. The pattern references the Japanese term 花霞 (hana-gasumi, meaning flower haze), which may indicate the visual inspiration for the garment's aesthetic
- 2x2 Ribbing: Used for the waistband, cuffs, and neckband, this elastic stitch pattern alternates two knit stitches with two purl stitches. Ribbing provides stretch and recovery, ensuring the sweater maintains its shape at edges and creates a fitted finish
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Hazy pattern is designed for sport weight yarn, a lightweight to medium yarn category that produces a fabric with excellent drape and wearability. Sport weight yarn is ideal for sweaters intended for layering or mild weather wear. The pattern includes specific finished measurements and gauge requirements to ensure proper fit. Knitters will need appropriate needles for sport weight yarn (typically US sizes 4-6, depending on desired gauge) and standard knitting tools for finishing, including a tapestry needle for seaming the flat-worked pieces together.
Pattern Structure and Finishing
The downloadable PDF includes detailed schematics showing finished measurements for all sizes, allowing knitters to select the appropriate size before beginning. The pattern provides separate instructions for the back panel, front panel, and sleeves (worked twice), with clear abbreviations and step-by-step finishing instructions. The neckband is worked last, typically picked up from the neck edge and worked in ribbing to create a professional, stretchy finish. Seaming instructions guide the assembly of all pieces into the completed garment.
