Product Description

The beautiful "chain of hearts" on the border of the hat is shaped with simple cables. The two-color stripe above the border is made with elongated slipped stitches. The pattern includes pictures illustrating the technique with the slipped stitches, it's very easy to knit.

The border is made sideways, then stitches are picked up and the top is knitted in the round.

The hat requires some sewing (to join the cast on and bound off edges of the border).

Hat "February" by Yelena Chen

What is Being Made

Hat "February" is a handknitted hat designed by Yelena Chen, sized to fit children or average adults with head circumferences of 21" to 23" and a finished height of 8". This intermediate-level knitting project creates a classic, wearable hat with decorative cable detailing and a contrasting color accent.

Knitting Techniques Used

This hat employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The border of the hat is constructed sideways, meaning the ribbed edge is knitted horizontally and then stitches are picked up to work the main body downward or upward. Circular needles are used in a non-traditional manner, functioning as straight needles during the border construction. The crown shaping is accomplished using double-pointed needles to decrease stitches as the hat tapers toward the top. Cable techniques form the primary decorative element, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted stitch patterns that add visual interest and texture to the finished hat.

Stitches Used

The foundational stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric base of the hat. Two cable stitch variations provide the decorative detailing:

  • 2/1 RPC (Right Purl Cable) – created by slipping 1 stitch to a cable needle and holding it to the back, knitting 2 stitches from the left-hand needle, then purling 1 stitch from the cable needle
  • 2/1 LPC (Left Purl Cable) – created by slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle and holding it to the front, purling 1 stitch from the left-hand needle, then knitting 2 stitches from the cable needle

These cable variations create a sophisticated twisted effect that distinguishes the hat from basic stockinette designs.

Materials and Gauge

The hat is worked using Lion Brand Vanna's Choice yarn, a 100% acrylic fiber available in multiple colorways. The main color (Yarn A) requires 1 skein of this #4 medium worsted weight yarn (also called 10 ply). Available color options include Pink or Taupe for the primary yarn, with a small amount of contrast yarn (Yarn B) in White or Cranberry for accent details. Any comparable worsted-weight yarn of similar weight and yardage may be substituted.

The project requires U.S. #9 (5.5 mm) circular needles measuring 16" in length, used as straight needles for the border construction, plus a set of U.S. #9 double-pointed needles (4 or 5 needles) for shaping the crown. Additional tools include a cable needle for managing cable stitches, a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

The working gauge is 4 stitches per 1 inch when worked in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished hat dimensions.

Difficulty Level

This hat is rated as an intermediate knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable stitches and manage shaping techniques using double-pointed needles. The sideways border construction and cable work require attention to pattern detail, making it more challenging than basic beginner projects while remaining accessible to developing knitters.
