Product Description
This scarf was inspired by a cake that my family makes. It's called a Harvey Wallbanger cake. It's an orange cake with a creamy icing that's nicely boozed up. :slightly_smiling_face: I designed the scarf to have the nice orange color in the middle, just like the cake with the browned up exterior and the icing sitting on the outside. I hope you enjoy it!!
For this scarf I used the following yarn:
Spud & Chloë SWEATER (100gr/160yds 55% Superwash Wool, 45% Organic Cotton): 2 skeins each of Color A: Ice Cream (7500); Color C: Pollen (7508) and 3 skeins Color B: Chipmunk (7524).
Harvey Wallbanger Scarf by TLCrafts and Design
Project Overview
The Harvey Wallbanger Scarf is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by TLCrafts and Design. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished scarf measuring 16 inches wide by 92 inches long, making it a generous accessory suitable for wrapping and layering. The design incorporates color work using three distinct yarn colors, offering knitters an engaging project that combines technique skill with visual interest.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a long, rectangular scarf with a finished width of 16 inches and length of 92 inches when blocked. The scarf is designed as a wearable accessory that showcases color blocking and stitch definition through the use of multiple yarn colors and slip stitch techniques.
Yarn and Materials
The Harvey Wallbanger Scarf uses Spud & Chloë SWEATER yarn, a blend of 55% Superwash Wool and 45% Organic Cotton. This fiber combination provides durability, easy care properties, and a comfortable drape suitable for scarves. The yarn weight is classified as aran and worsted weight, offering good stitch definition and a balanced fabric density.
The pattern calls for a total of 7 skeins distributed across three colors:
- Color A: Ice Cream (7500) – 2 skeins, 320 yards total
- Color B: Chipmunk (7524) – 3 skeins, 420 yards total
- Color C: Pollen (7508) – 2 skeins, 320 yards total
The total yardage requirement is approximately 1,040 yards across all three colors.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires US 10 / 6.00 mm needles in either 40-inch circular or straight needle format. Circular needles of this length provide flexibility for managing the 16-inch width comfortably. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The working gauge is 12 stitches and 16 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch when blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project to reach the intended finished dimensions of 16 inches wide by 92 inches long. Blocking is recommended to even out the fabric and achieve the specified measurements.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Harvey Wallbanger Scarf employs slip stitch techniques as a primary design element. Slip stitches are used strategically to create visual texture and to manage color transitions without traditional stranding or intarsia methods.
The stitch glossary includes the following techniques:
- Sl1wyib – Slip one stitch purlwise with yarn at the back of the work, maintaining consistent tension to avoid pulling the following stitch too tightly
- Sl1wyif – Slip one stitch purlwise with yarn at the front of the work, again maintaining even tension
- Sl2wyib – Slip two stitches purlwise with yarn at the back of the work
- Sl2wyif – Slip two stitches purlwise with yarn at the front of the work
These slip stitch variations allow knitters to create color blocking effects and textural interest while working primarily in stockinette stitch. The careful management of yarn placement during slip stitches—whether held in front or back—determines how colors appear in the finished fabric and contributes to the overall visual design of the scarf.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Harvey Wallbanger Scarf requires knitters to be comfortable with basic knitting fundamentals including cast-on, knit and purl stitches, and bind-off techniques. The intermediate classification reflects the added complexity of managing multiple yarn colors and executing slip stitch techniques with consistent tension. Knitters should have experience reading pattern instructions and maintaining even gauge throughout a project.
