I just love to be wrapped in a big cozy shawl on foggy mornings at the beach. This cowl gives me the feel and look without the fuss. Just pop it on and go! The cowl is knitted top down, flat and seamed. A circular needle is suggested to accommodate the growing number of stitches.

Harbor Fog Cowl by Martha Wissing
What is Being Made
The Harbor Fog Cowl is a knitted triangular cowl designed to evoke the cozy, wrapped feeling of a large shawl without the bulk or complexity. Inspired by foggy mornings at the beach, this one-size cowl drapes elegantly around the shoulders and neck. The finished piece measures 20 inches in top circumference and 20 inches in depth before steam blocking, expanding to 22 inches in top circumference and 21 inches in depth after blocking, making it a substantial yet wearable accessory.
Construction Technique
The Harbor Fog Cowl is knitted top down in a flat construction method, then seamed to create the finished garment. This approach allows knitters to work from the narrower top edge and increase stitches as they progress downward, creating the triangular silhouette. A 32-inch circular knitting needle is recommended to comfortably accommodate the growing number of stitches as the cowl expands, though the fabric is worked flat rather than in the round.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Harbor Fog Cowl is Garter Stitch, which is created by knitting every row. Garter stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges that work beautifully for this design. The pattern requires the use of stitch markers to track increases and shaping, and a removable stitch marker is helpful for marking pattern repeats or returning to a previous row if needed.
Yarn and Materials
The Harbor Fog Cowl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn. The pattern calls for three hanks of Anzula Cricket yarn (100 grams / 250 yards per hank) in three coordinating colors: Black Cherry (main color), Gravity (contrast color 1), and Pewter (contrast color 2). This yarn choice provides a soft, elegant drape suitable for a cowl that sits close to the neck and shoulders. Knitters will need a size 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needle measuring 32 inches in length, along with stitch markers and a removable stitch marker for pattern tracking.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 21 stitches and 44 rows over 4 inches in Garter Stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished cowl meets the intended measurements. The pattern includes steam blocking as a finishing step, which helps even out the garter stitch texture and allows the cowl to reach its full blocked dimensions.
Skill Level
The Harbor Fog Cowl is rated as an Intermediatelevel project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable with increases, decreases, and seaming techniques. The straightforward garter stitch pattern and top-down construction provide a manageable learning experience for intermediate knitters looking to expand their skills.
