Happy Halloween Sampler – Cross Stitch Embroidery Pattern by Kooler Design Studio

The Happy Halloween Sampler (KDS# 1644) is a downloadable PDF cross stitch pattern designed by Linda Gillum for Kooler Design Studio. Published in 2013 and part of the Kooler Classic Charts collection, this festive Halloween-themed sampler is a wonderful seasonal decoration project suited to beginner and intermediate embroiderers alike. The finished piece makes an eye-catching holiday display, stitched in the classic sampler format that showcases Halloween motifs in a tall, portrait-oriented composition.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a Halloween-themed decorative sampler intended for use as seasonal home décor. Samplers are a beloved tradition in counted cross stitch, typically combining multiple motifs, text, and decorative borders into a single cohesive design. The Happy Halloween Sampler follows this tradition with a vertical layout measuring 76 stitches wide by 156 stitches high, making it a moderately sized project with plenty of detail to keep stitchers engaged throughout.

Fabric and Materials

  • Fabric: The design is specified to be stitched on 14 Count White Aida cloth, the most widely available and beginner-friendly evenweave fabric. Aida's clearly defined holes make it easy to place each stitch accurately.
  • Thread: The pattern uses embroidery floss, with specific DMC or similar floss colors listed in the pattern's Floss and Symbol Listing. Multiple strand counts are used depending on the stitch type (see below).
  • Fabric Size: Stitchers are instructed to add 4–6 inches to each measurement when cutting fabric to allow for framing or finishing margins.

Finished Size by Fabric Count

  • 14 Count Aida: approximately 5½ inches wide × 11⅛ inches high
  • 16 Count Aida: approximately 4¾ inches wide × 9¾ inches high
  • 18 Count Aida: approximately 4¼ inches wide × 8⅝ inches high

Stitching on a higher fabric count produces a smaller, finer finished piece, giving experienced stitchers the flexibility to customize the final size to suit their framing or display needs.

Stitches Used

This pattern employs a combination of classic counted embroidery stitches, each contributing a different visual quality to the finished sampler:

  • Full Cross Stitches: The primary stitch used to fill in the main design areas. Each full cross stitch is worked using 3 strands of embroidery floss, giving the design good coverage and a rich, slightly raised texture on the Aida fabric.
  • Quarter Stitches (¼ Stitches): Used alongside full stitches to create smoother curves and more refined outlines within the design. Quarter stitches are also worked with 3 strands of floss, consistent with the full stitches.
  • Backstitch: Used for outlining, lettering, and adding fine detail and definition to the motifs. Backstitching is worked with a single strand (1 strand) of embroidery floss, producing crisp, clean lines that bring the design to life.
  • French Knots: These small, textured knots add dimensional detail — commonly used for eyes, dots, and decorative accents in Halloween imagery. French knots in this design are worked with 1 strand of floss for delicate, precise results.

Techniques and Craft

Counted cross stitch is a form of embroidery in which stitches are placed by counting threads on an evenweave fabric, following a charted grid pattern. Each square on the chart corresponds to one stitch on the fabric. This method ensures accuracy and consistency across the design without the need for transferred outlines. The combination of full stitches, quarter stitches, backstitching, and French knots in this sampler reflects a well-rounded counted embroidery project that introduces stitchers to the most essential techniques in the craft.
