Hadlow Cowl by Charlotte Walford
What is Being Made
The Hadlow Cowl is a versatile neck accessory designed by Charlotte Walford, available in two sizing options: Small and Large. The Large cowl is specifically sized to wrap twice around the neck, making it a generous, multifunctional piece. This is an ideal stash-busting project, perfect for knitters looking to use up leftover yarn from previous projects or odd skeins in their collection.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
- Small: Circumference 68cm (26.75"), Height 20-25cm (7.75")
- Large: Circumference 136cm (53.5"), Height 20-25cm (7.75-9.75")
The height may vary depending on the metreage of the yarn selected, allowing for customization based on available materials.
Techniques Used
The Hadlow Cowl features helical stripes as its primary design element. These clever yet simple-to-knit stripes create visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate-level knitters. The construction uses stocking stitch for the main body, combined with a 1x1 twisted rib edging that provides a refined finish and helps the cowl maintain its shape.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) for the main body
- 1x1 twisted rib for the edging
Yarn and Materials
The Hadlow Cowl is designed to work with Chunky, Aran, or DK weight yarn, offering flexibility for stash busting. The pattern requires 50-100g of each of two contrasting yarn colours, depending on the size being knitted. The example shown uses Debbie Bliss Paloma in colours #13 and #16 (1 x 50g skein each for the Small size).
Knitting needles required are 9mm and 10mm, accommodating the range of yarn weights specified. The pattern recommends working to the tension listed on your yarn label for best results.
Tension
Standard tension should be 12 stitches and 17 rounds to 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using the recommended needle size. Knitters are advised to check the tension information on their specific yarn label, as this may vary based on the yarn weight and fibre content chosen.
Difficulty Level
Rated as Intermediate, the Hadlow Cowl is accessible to knitters with some experience. While the helical stripe technique is described as clever, it remains simple enough to execute, making this an excellent project for those looking to expand their skills without excessive complexity.
