Product Description
Say hello to Gwen, she loves to dress up in her welsh traditional costume. She just loves all things Wales, and especially loves the national flower, the daffodil! Gwen is an amigurumi doll wearing a petticoat, gown, boots, apron, shawl, cap and hat. The outfit is similar to other historical costumes.
The body of this pattern is worked as one piece from the toes to the shoulders, so no need for too much tedious hand sewing!
This pattern is written with US crochet notation and is an intermediate pattern, some crochet knowledge of basic stitches is required. Using the materials suggested this doll measures 30cm (12 inches). Any yarn can be used with this pattern with an appropriate size crochet hook to create a tight tension, although other yarns may affect the size of the finished doll. Suggested materials: DK (8ply) 100% cotton yarn, 3mm crochet hook, toy stuffing, 9mm saftey eyes, 3 small buttons and black embroidery thread for sewing on the face.
This pattern is for personal use only.
Gwen the Welsh Doll – Crochet Pattern Overview
What Is Being Made
Gwen the Welsh Doll is an amigurumi-style crochet doll designed by Victoria Kairis of Smiley Crochet Things. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished doll measuring 30cm (12 inches) in height and 15cm (6 inches) in width. The doll is crafted to represent traditional Welsh costume, making it a culturally inspired handmade textile project suitable for intermediate-level crocheters.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern employs the amigurumi method, a specialized crochet technique for creating three-dimensional stuffed toys and dolls. The amigurumi approach involves working in continuous spirals rather than joining rounds with slip stitches, which creates seamless, flowing fabric ideal for doll construction. The pattern notes indicate that there is a distinct right side and wrong side to the fabric, with the right side positioned on the outside when working in a clockwise direction. This attention to fabric orientation ensures a polished, professional appearance for the finished doll.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While the PDF excerpt does not detail every individual stitch used throughout the pattern, the amigurumi construction method typically incorporates fundamental crochet stitches such as single crochet for tight, dense fabric that holds stuffing securely. The continuous spiral technique eliminates visible seams between rounds, contributing to the smooth, seamless quality characteristic of quality amigurumi dolls.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed using Paintbox Cotton DK yarn, a 100% cotton fiber in DK (double knitting) weight. The specific yarn colors and quantities required are:
