Product Description
Do you love to potter int he greenhouse? Now you can potter with your teapot if you knit this fabulous tea cosy that looks like an old fashiopned glasshouse.
The main part of the tea cosy forms the actual greenhouse. The structural parts of the greenhouse are white and the 'glass' is silver.
To add humour and interest I have knitted an oversized ripe tomato growing out from the roof window. Wouldn't we all love to wake up to a giant prize willing tomato?
Also outside the greenhouse is a watering can, a few buttercups and a sunflower in a plant pot. They add interest from all views and they are things that tend to be found hanging around the greenhouse.
We're all more nature aware these days and I thought it would be lovely to add a little bit of wildlife to the tea cosy, so I made a little hedgehog. He's hiding around the side and he's looking for tasty slugs.
Greenhouse Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Greenhouse Tea Cosy is a decorative knitted cover designed by TeaCosyFolk to fit a 2-pint teapot or teapots that hold 6 to 8 cups. This intermediate-level knitting project combines functional design with decorative colorwork, creating a charming accessory that keeps teapots warm while adding visual interest to the kitchen or dining table.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The construction uses double thickness yarn for specific sections, where two strands of yarn are worked together as a single strand to create added structure and warmth. The pattern incorporates colorwork elements, allowing knitters to introduce multiple colors throughout the design to create the greenhouse-inspired aesthetic. Ribbed stitch patterns are used to create texture and elasticity in the fabric. The cosy is constructed in sections, with the back piece being a primary component, and uses stitch holders to manage active stitches during construction.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches
- Ribbing (K2, P2) – a repeating pattern of knit two, purl two that creates vertical texture and stretch
Materials Required
The Greenhouse Tea Cosy uses Stylecraft Special DK yarn, a double knitting weight yarn, in the following quantities and colors:
- 46g White – for the main body (worked as double thickness)
- 38g Silver – for structural elements (worked as double thickness)
- 5g Kelly Green – for foliage details
- 5g Lipstick – for accent colorwork
- 4g Sunshine – for bright highlights
- 4g Dark Brown – for framework elements
- 4g Grass Green – for additional greenery
- 3g Tomato – for botanical accents
- 1g Black – for fine details
Knitting needles required include 5.5mm needles (UK size 5 or US size 9) for the main sections and 4.00mm needles (UK size 8 or US size 6) for ribbed edgings or finer detail work. Additional notions include a stitch holder for managing stitches during construction, 2 black beads for embellishment, and stuffing to add dimension to the finished piece.
Gauge and Construction
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to measure 10x10cm, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size. The main cosy back begins with casting on 28 stitches using double thickness White yarn on 5.5mm needles, establishing the foundation for the piece. The construction starts with ribbed stitch work in a knit two, purl two pattern, creating a structured base that will hold its shape around the teapot.
