Product Description
Illusion knitting map of Great Britain.
The title comes from the poem And did those feet in ancient time by William Blake. It is now very well-known, in UK, as the anthem Jerusalem. ‘Green and pleasant land’ really refers to just England but the map includes the whole of UK and Ireland.
When you look straight at the map you see only stripes. As you move around the map appears and disappears.
The map in the photos was made using Stylecraft Special DK but you can use any yarn and the illusion will still work. Using DK, the size is approximately 67 cm x 80 cm (26” x 32”). Using other yarns might change the overall size. I used about 400 metres (440 yards) of each of Cloud Blue and Kelly Green. Extra yarn is needed for the border.
Green and Pleasant Land by Steve Plummer - Woolly Thoughts
What is Being Made
Green and Pleasant Land is an illusion knitting map of the United Kingdom and Ireland, designed by Steve Plummer and Pat Ashforth. The title draws inspiration from William Blake's poem "And did those feet in ancient time," which is now recognized in the UK as the anthem "Jerusalem." While the phrase "green and pleasant land" traditionally refers to England, this design encompasses the entire geography of the UK and Ireland. The finished piece measures approximately 70 cm x 80 cm (26" x 32"), making it suitable for display as a wall-hanging, incorporation into a cushion cover, integration into a sweater, or use as part of an afghan.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This project employs illusion knitting, a specialized technique that creates visual effects through strategic color changes and stitch placement. The primary stitch used throughout is garter stitch, which provides the foundation for the illusion pattern to emerge. Illusion knitting works by manipulating how two colors interact within the garter stitch structure, allowing the map of the UK and Ireland to appear when the fabric is viewed from certain angles or distances. The effect is most pronounced when the knitting is worked fairly tightly, which enhances the clarity of the geographical design.
The chart-based construction requires careful attention to color placement at each row, as the illusion effect depends on precise execution of the pattern. This technique demands intermediate-level knitting skills, as it requires understanding how to read specialized illusion knitting charts and maintain consistent tension throughout the project.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 400 metres (440 yards) of DK weight yarn in each of two colors, plus extra yardage for borders. The original design uses Cloud Blue and Kelly Green. While any yarn thickness can be substituted, doing so will alter the overall finished size of the panel.
- Needles: Size 3.25 mm needles are recommended as a starting point, though adjustment may be necessary depending on individual gauge and desired fabric characteristics. The tightness of the work should be calibrated based on the intended end use: wall-hangings and bags benefit from tighter, more structured knitting, while cushions, sweaters, and afghans require a softer, more flexible fabric.
- Gauge: Approximately 5 stitches to 2.5 cm (1 inch) in garter stitch
Design Considerations
The illusion knitting technique used in this pattern creates a unique visual experience where the map design emerges through the interplay of the two yarn colors. The flexibility to adjust needle size and yarn weight allows crafters to customize both the final dimensions and the fabric hand to suit their specific project application, whether creating a decorative wall piece or a functional garment component.
