Product Description
Sometimes you want to try something just a little out of the ordinary to keep knitting interesting. The body of this vest is worked in two pieces - the left side of the body (front and back together) and right side of the body (again, front and back together). After adding the edging to the backs, the left and right sides are joined by using Three-Needle Bind-Off.
Use ribbon or ribbon yarn to lace up the back of the vest. Add a bead closure at the bottom to match the bead closures used for the front.
You'll need about 3 yds / 2.7 m of ribbon or ribbon yarn, 18 round beads that are 12 mm diameter, and 36 size 6 (4 mm) seed beads; make sure the holes in the beads are big enough to thread the ribbon through them.
Grayling Vest by Therese Chynoweth
What is Being Made
The Grayling Vest is a sleeveless knitted waistcoat designed by Therese Chynoweth as an intermediate-level knitting project. This standard-fitting vest is available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 4XL, with finished bust measurements from 33 inches [84 cm] to 61½ inches [156 cm] and length measurements from 21½ inches [54.5 cm] to 25 inches [63.5 cm]. The design is shown in a sophisticated graphite colorway and is intended to be worn with approximately 2–4 inches [5–10 cm] of positive ease for comfortable layering.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Grayling Vest employs circular knitting techniques using both circular needles and double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless or minimal-seam construction typical of modern garment knitting. The pattern instructions are written for the smallest size (XS) with larger sizes provided in parentheses throughout, making it accessible for knitters working across the full size range. This intermediate-level project requires competency in reading stitch abbreviations, managing multiple sizes, and working with the specified needle sizes.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While specific stitch details are not provided in the available pattern excerpt, the Grayling Vest as an intermediate waistcoat typically incorporates fundamental knitting stitches and stitch patterns appropriate to the DK weight yarn and needle size. The use of circular needles in both 16-inch [40 cm] and 32-inch [80 cm] lengths suggests the pattern involves working in the round for portions of the garment, a hallmark technique for seamless vest construction.
Yarn and Materials
The Grayling Vest is knitted using DK weight yarn (Light #3), a versatile medium-weight yarn ideal for creating garments with drape and definition. The pattern is shown in Shibui Knits Echo, a luxury blend composed of 52% silk noil and 48% fine merino, which provides a sophisticated sheen and breathable warmth. This yarn yields 160 yards [146 m] per 1.41 ounce [40 g] hank. Yardage requirements range from 682 yards [624 m] for the smallest size to 1257 yards [1149 m] for the largest size (4XL), with the size Small (shown) requiring 775 yards [709 m].
Needles and Tools
Construction of the Grayling Vest requires US 5 [3.75 mm] circular needles in two lengths—a 16-inch [40 cm] needle for working smaller circumferences and a 32-inch [80 cm] needle for larger sections of the garment. The pattern also calls for one double-pointed needle, likely for managing stitches or working small-diameter sections. Knitters should have appropriate stitch markers, yarn needles for finishing, and any additional notions specified in the complete pattern instructions.
