I was inspired for this capelet by two dominant trends for this winter, turtle-neck and grey to make this capelet which will keep your neck and shoulders warm in the first chilly days of autumn. Gray Reversible Cabled Capelet by Evelyn Siatra
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a reversible capelet designed to keep your neck and shoulders warm during the transitional autumn and early winter months. The capelet features a finished neck edge circumference of 40cm (15.9 inches) and widens to 51cm at the lower edge, making it a versatile layering piece that works over turtlenecks or worn alone. The reversible construction means both sides of the garment are finished and wearable, doubling the design options from a single knit.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The capelet is constructed using the brioche rib stitch, a signature knitting technique that creates a deeply textured, three-dimensional fabric with excellent elasticity and visual interest. Brioche rib is known for its voluminous appearance, which is why the designer selected fine yarn to maintain a wearable drape without excess bulk. The reversible nature of the design means the brioche rib pattern reads beautifully from both sides of the finished piece, making it a true two-in-one garment.
Brioche rib combines knit and yarn-over stitches in a specific sequence that creates the characteristic raised, dimensional look. This stitch pattern naturally provides warmth and insulation while maintaining breathability, making it ideal for shoulder and neck coverage during cooler seasons.
Materials
The pattern calls for fine yarn in alpaca and merino wool blend. This fiber combination was deliberately chosen by the designer to avoid adding bulk while providing excellent warmth and comfort. Alpaca contributes softness and insulating properties, while merino wool adds durability and temperature-regulating qualities. The fine weight ensures that despite the voluminous brioche rib stitch, the finished capelet remains elegant and wearable rather than oversized.
Specific needle size and yardage requirements are included within the complete pattern download.
Design Inspiration
This capelet was inspired by two dominant fashion trends: the turtleneck silhouette and the popularity of gray as a versatile neutral color. The combination creates a modern, seasonally appropriate accessory that bridges the gap between summer and full winter wear.
