Product Description

GRATITUDE is a classic, seed stitch pullover with clean lines, beautiful side vent detail and an I-cord edge worked from the hem-to-cuff. Knit all-in-one piece from the bottom up, GRATITUDE is knit in DK weight yarn on US size 8 or 9 needles. I have knit my GRATITUDEs in one of my favorite brand yarns, Shibui Knits, for an extra luxurious experience. It should be noted that I needed a different size needle when knitting with the silk/linen yarn, KOAN, than with the wool yarns, NEST and HAVEN, so it is really important to knit a swatch to check your gauge before setting out.

Gratitude Knit Sweater by VERSACIKNITS

What Is Being Made

Gratitude is a knitted pullover sweater designed by independent designer VERSACIKNITS. This garment is a fitted crewneck pullover available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, with finished bust circumferences from 34 inches to 60 inches. The design features a front that is approximately 1¼ inches shorter than the back, creating a subtle high-low hemline. The sweater is shown in size M knit in Shibui Koan held double in the Bone colorway.

Techniques and Construction Methods

Gratitude is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level knitters. The sweater is worked in the round using circular needles, as indicated by the gauge specification for "rows/rnds." The pattern employs a tubular cast-on technique, which creates a professional, seamless edge ideal for ribbed or textured stitch patterns. The use of double-pointed needles and circular needles of varying lengths (16 inches and 32 inches) allows for efficient working of different sections of the garment, from smaller circumferences to larger body sections.

Stitches Used

Seed Stitch is the primary stitch pattern featured in Gratitude. Seed Stitch is a fundamental textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern, producing a dense, reversible fabric with excellent drape and visual interest. This stitch is worked on the larger needles and is the basis for the gauge measurement of 16 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches when blocked.

Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions

Yarn: Gratitude is designed to be knit with Shibui Koan held double. Shibui Koan is a linen and silk blend yarn composed of 70% Linen and 30% Mulberry Silk, offering approximately 248 yards per 227 meters in a single strand. By holding the yarn double, knitters effectively create a worsted or bulky-weight fabric from a DK-weight yarn base. The linen-silk blend provides a luxurious drape and breathability, though the pattern notes that linen and silk yarns have less elasticity than wool and may require different needle sizes to achieve proper gauge.

Needles: The pattern calls for US size 8 or 9 (5 or 5.5mm) double-pointed needles and circular needles in 16-inch and 32-inch lengths for main fabric knitting. A needle one size smaller is required for the tubular cast-on. Needle selection should be determined by individual gauge swatch results, as the linen-silk blend may require adjustment from the suggested sizes.

Notions: Knitters will need locking stitch markers and closed stitch markers to track pattern repeats and mark increases or decreases throughout the construction of the sweater.

Gauge and Fit Considerations

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 30 rows in Seed Stitch on the larger needle, measured over 4 inches when blocked. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit. The design includes 4 to 6 inches of positive ease at the bust, meaning the finished garment will be larger than the wearer's actual measurements for a comfortable, relaxed fit. The pattern specifically cautions that linen and silk yarns have reduced elasticity compared to wool, which may necessitate needle size adjustments to achieve the correct gauge with this particular fiber blend.
